4 Blue-Chip Bank Stocks: Bank of America (BOA)

Fear of rising interest rates brought on by positive economic trends within the U.S. and the European Union — the Greek debt crisis notwithstanding — should in theory be positive for Bank of America (BAC) and other blue-chip bank stocks as they potentially benefit from the higher rates.

Because of this, BAC could also be viewed as a safe-haven opportunity while a huge chunk of the S&P 500 falters under what many consider a monetarily hawkish inevitability.

In the markets, however, the prognosis for BAC stock is quite mixed. On one hand, investors can advocate for BAC on the basis of strong statistical trends. Since April, BAC is up 12%, largely on the back of impressive performances in the past two weeks. Such “quarterly returns” on average produce an 80% likelihood that BAC will move higher over the next 90 days.

But those odds have been generated mostly when BAC is on the run. Currently, however, Bank of America stock is stymied by a consolidation range, where the bulls have been unable to beat upside resistance at $18. Although bullish technical patterns — such as flags or pennants — feature a consolidation period prior to a breakout, this particular trading range is quite long in the tooth, active since April of last year.

Historical odds suggest that BAC will convincingly make a positive breakthrough but should the bulls show signs of weakness at the $18 threshold, it could turn out to be a dangerous gamble.

Bank of America (BAC)
YTD performance: -2%
Current price: $17.50
Price target: $20

Bank of America's wealth management business is a "hidden gem" that has amassed assets at a faster pace than any of its peers over the past two years, according to Morgan Stanley. Yet that hasn't really been priced into the stock yet.

BofA also has the most to gain from a possible rate hike by the Fed.

Due to its consumer-centric portfolio, BofA's net interest income should post sizable gains when rates rise

Stocks to Buy: Bank of America (BAC)

You don’t see the words “Bank of America (BAC)” and “buy” all that often in the same sentence … but a pretty good-looking chart promises good things for shares in July.

BAC just hit a golden cross and heads into the month with some serious momentum.

Shares are up nearly 7% over the last month alone, putting them in striking distance of their 52-week highs.

It also doesn’t hurt that BAC is up more than 14% in an otherwise disappointing year for stocks, and that the 200-day moving average is in a long-term uptrend.

Finally, BAC stock traditionally does very well during the hottest months of the year, with an average price gain of 4.7% in July and resilient 0.2% in August, according to data from Thomson Reuters Stock Reports.

Blue-Chip Stocks to Sell: Bank of America Corp (BAC)

Banking stocks have generally been hit hard by news of the Brexit. While European banks are suffering the most, U.S. banks are also struggling, particularly those that are heavily dependent on interest rates.

Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC) stands to make an additional $6 billion in interest income should the Federal Reserve raise interest rates, something that enticed investors to buy into the bank a few months ago when a rate hike appeared imminent.

Now, rising rates are very unlikely, and some are even expecting central banks around the world to lower rates in order keep markets stable.

Not only is BAC doomed to miss out an additional interest income, but the bank is also likely to lose money from its investing arm as well.

A volatile market and uncertain conditions will keep investors from making moves, but more importantly, it will also make it less appealing for BAC corporate clients to go through with mergers, acquisitions and IPOs — all of which generate hefty fees for BAC.
