Warning on a health product

By Reico Wong

UNDECLARED potent substances in a health product called The New Millennium Male Horse Power Capsule have been detected by the Health Sciences Authority during routine quality sampling checks.

The product, which claims to be a natural aphrodisiac and strength enhancer, has been found to contain yohimbine and dehydroepiandrosterone - substances which can cause serious side effects especially when consumed without professional medical supervision.

No adverse events associated with the product were previously reported. However, as the product has been marketed locally, HSA on Thursday warned members of the public who may have bought the product not to take it as it may cause serious health hazards to those who have existing medical conditions.

In the event they have consumed this product, they should seek medical advice if they feel unwell or are concerned about their health. Consumers who develop any unexpected reactions to a traditional or herbal medicine are also advised to inform their doctors.

The New Millennium Male Horse Power Capsule is distributed locally by American Bioceutics Labs LLP and manufactured by AIE Pharmaceuticals Inc. which is based in the US.

Only one shipment of this product had been imported so far, and it is sold locally under the batch number of B/N 786-01-09. All remaining stocks of the product have been seized from the distributor.

This common supermarket item is a bacteria playground
By Dr. David Eifrig in Retirement Millionaire:

Your meat is not safe... despite what the government tells you. Two out of three chickens in the grocery harbor bacteria like salmonella and campylobacter (the leading causes of food borne illness).

These bacteria sicken millions a year and kill around 500. These bacteria are quickly becoming resistant to antibiotics as animals get the same drugs to keep them "healthy."

Do what I do and rinse well any meat before cooking it. I cook chicken to 165 degrees (with a $10 meat thermometer). And keep the raw chicken and juices away from other foods.

According to Consumer Reports, the worst offenders are Tyson and Foster Farms (80% of chicken infected), while the most reliable is Perdue with a 56% infection rate (still more than half).

China official wanted toxic bean case hushed up

China official: City 'inconsiderate' for publicizing beans tainted by toxic pesticide

ANITA CHANG
AP News

Mar 02, 2010 02:52 EST

The discovery in Chinese markets of tons of beans treated with a highly toxic pesticide has prompted an indignant response from an official responsible for the safety of the produce, despite a public outcry over recent food safety scandals.

One city's decision to publicize the problem was "inconsiderate of friends," according to Zhou Qingchong, deputy director of the agriculture bureau law enforcement team in the southern city of Sanya where the contaminated beans originated.

Authorities in the central city of Wuhan recently announced it had destroyed 3.5 tons of "yard-long" beans from Sanya that had been treated with isocarbophos, a pesticide that is banned from use on fruits and vegetables. Several southern provinces have since reported finding the tainted beans in their markets, although no one has been reported sickened.

Zhou told China National Radio for a report this week that his city and the Ministry of Agriculture had lost face because of the complaint from Wuhan.

His response underscored how Chinese bureaucrats often prefer to handle sensitive issues privately, in a manner where public outcry and blame can be minimized.

That mindset has been at least partly to blame for past food safety scandals in China, including the 2008 case of tainted infant formula where the producers and local authorities knew the product contained a toxic chemical but tried to keep it hushed up. At least six children died and nearly 300,000 fell ill.

The pesticide used on the beans — which are pencil-thin and similar to green beans — is still relatively easy to buy in Sanya, CNR reported. Two bottles of isocarbophos cost 18 yuan (US$2.60), while approved pesticides would cost 50 yuan ($7.30).

"Due to the lack of effective supervision of pesticide sales, farmers can still get the banned ones fairly easily, which they prefer for their low prices," Sun Shubao, secretary-general of the China Crop Protection Industry Association, was quoted as saying by the official China Daily newspaper on Tuesday.

Authorities are stepping up inspections of yard-long beans from Hainan, where Sanya is located, checking them repeatedly from farm to market, the Ministry of Agriculture said on its Web site Monday. Hainan province has also dispatched six teams to cities around China to promote its yard-long beans, it said.

CALLING ALL MEN AND ALL WOMEN WHO HAVE MALE FRIENDS OR FAMILY MEMBERS!! PLEASE READ!!

Dunno how true but JUST be careful!

A Singapore man’s unhappy experience with a PRC lady
Temasek Review

The below email has been circulating around in cyberspace and was forwarded to us for publication. For those of you who knows the identity of the author, please keep it strictly confidential.

Please forward this to all your male Singaporean loved ones and friends.

This is something that actually happened to me and I feel that it needs to be shared. I believe my experience will help your male loved one stay out of trouble.
_____________________________________________

On the morning of 18th February at about 9.50 am I was standing at Coffee Bean (Novena Square) counter, ordering my usual cup of mocha latte before heading into the office as usual. Behind me was a row of leather cushions that the mall has provided. In the corner of my eyes, I noticed a middle aged Chinese lady with an umbrella and a cold storage plastic bag, looking really nervous, glancing around every now and then.

The lady had shoulder length hair tied up neatly in a pony tail and looked pretty plain, wearing just a normal t-shirt and jeans – nothing too revealing. She was about mid 20s to early 30s and pretty pleasant looking I must say. But her eyes were scary when she stared intently at me for a short moment I did not pay much attention to her as I thought she was waiting for the slimming centre to open. I carried on my business as usual, glancing through the Today newspaper.

As I made my way towards the direction of Banquet coffee shop, s he stood up and walked towards my direction. What happened next caught me completely by surprise.

The lady stopped directly in front me of, stared at me and suddenly screamed “Why you touch me?” Only then did I realise from her unmistakable accent that she is from China. I said “Sorry? What are you talking about?”

I was more in shock then angry. The first thing that came to my mind was, is this some woman that I accidentally brushed on the train this morning? She did not bother to explain but kept on screaming and pointing her index finger at me “Why you touch me!” about 4 or 5 times. She then squatted, covering her face and cried, crying out over and over again that I had touched her. I was really lost. There were some people walking past me and I felt like a criminal standing there, while people gave me this disgusted look. All the while I was trying to talk to the China lady but she remains in a squatted position, covering her face and crying.

A! t this point of time, a Malay bang in light blue coloured uniform walked over from Banquet. Seeing the situation he asked me what happened. The lady stood up and said that I had “touched” her. She then told the
Malay bang that I need to giver her $500 to “see doctor” or else she would report me to the Chinese Embassy. She took out her hand phone and took several photos of me.

The Malay bang then said, “Bro, I think we better call the police”. At this point of time, I have gotten over my shock and anger was slowly taking over. I nodded to the Malay bang in agreement. I took out my hand phone too. But instead of taking her photo, I dialled 999 immediately. “I am calling the police myself. Let them settle the matter”. I said calmly to the both of them. At this point of time, she picked up her plastic bag and umbrella, and swiftly left towards the direction of Tan Tock Seng hospital – even ! before my call could connect!

We were left there puzzled. Someh ow I was relieved that it was over and did not want to proceed with the call. The Malay bang asked me if I was ok. All I said was “Thanks”. He patted my shoulder and walked away towards the direction of Coffee Bean. Several patrons inside banquet were already witnessing the commotion. I just wanted to get out of there.

In case something like this happens to you or your loved ones, do not make the same mistake I did, trying to console the woman. Immediately take out your hand phone, take a photo of her and call the police. Please help to
spread this around to our Singaporean husbands, sons, brothers and friends.

Please, my dear Singaporeans, look around you, what has happened to our country? Where have all these pests come from? Think about your loved ones and your other Singaporean friends. Forward this story and make sure that they know what to do when the same thing happens to them.

DO NOT start arguing or reasoning with her. Just take out your mobile & call police

My friend is a retired businessman in his early 60 and what he encountered last Saturday in a high end dining/shopping area could also happen to anyone of us.

My friend accompanies his wife to a bank in Holland Village to do some banking transaction. While his wife was being served by the personal banking executive, he decided to go and do some window-shopping around the area. While admiring the display, suddenly, out of nowhere, a young about 20+ girl pushes him aside and shouted at him, accusing my friend of molesting her. She then asked my friend to compensate her for her "ordeal" - lost of face.

My friend being a gentleman was stunned and lost of word for a moment because he really never does any thing to her. He just stood there and doesn’t know what to do. His mind went blank. Luckily, a Caucasian man nearby saw all that and tells the PRC girl to stop her nuisance (unsure whether she understand English) and take out his
mobile and say he wanted to call the police. The PRC girl quickly walked away joining the other shoppers.

Should any man become one of the victims, please stay calm. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT start arguing or reasoning with her. If you try to reason with her, then you had fallen into her trap. In general, people will most
likely sympathise and believe a female as a victim. You will end up paying her demand.

Just take out your mobile or ask someone (if you had no mobile) to call the police, let the law enforcement authority deal with her. For sure, all this PRC girls dare not face the justice of the law because most of them
are over-stayers.

Beware new phone scam
POLICE have alerted the public to a new variation of the 'lucky draw' phone scam, following several reported cases recently.

The scammers have been sending SMS notifications to members of the public via an overseas phone line, claiming that they have won cash of 925,000 pounds (S$1.95 million) in a worldwide 'Phone Top-Up Win Promotion' and that the money is ready to be sent to them.

The recipients were then advised to liaise with the organiser's representative at email address: [email protected].

'The scam is designed to dupe the victims into parting with their money,' said a police statement on Tuesday.

After deceiving the victims into believing that they have won prize money, the scammers convinced the victims to pay a tax or an administration fee to secure the release of their winnings, which did not exist.

The scammers would then abscond after receiving the money or they would conjure up more excuses to induce further payments from their victims.

Police advised the public to be vigilant against these bogus lottery and lucky draw scams and adopt the following measures:

* Ignore notifications of a win in a lottery or lucky draw especially when you have not purchased any lottery ticket or participated in any lucky draw.

* Do not make any payment to claim prize money. Winning a lucky draw or lottery does not require you to make any advance payment.

* Do not respond to a SMS or phone call informing that you have won prize money.

* Be wary of get-rich-quick offers. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it is probably a scam.

Members of public can report such suspicious offers to the Police at a Neighbourhood Police Centre. They may also call the Police hotline at 1800 - 255 0000.

More details of other scam tactics and the relevant crime prevention advisories can be found at the Singapore Police Force website at www.spf.gov.sg or the Commercial Affairs Department website at www.cad.gov.sg.

Drug gangs lure women
W. African syndicates luring women to act as drug mules

By Teh Joo Lin

WEST African syndicates from across the Indian Ocean have become a challenge for drug enforcement agencies in the region.

In recent years, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has sounded the alarm in Singapore over these syndicates, whose members seduce women so they will act as their drug mules.

Last year alone, they duped 15 women into drug trafficking after tempting them with promises of love and money. Only three women were caught for drug running in 2008.

Women in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines also have not been spared. In Manila last month, officers arrested three men - believed to be West African syndicate members - for recruiting Filipinos to work as drug couriers, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

The fight against West African organised crime syndicates is a key issue which has drawn more than 20 narcotics officials from eight Asean countries here for a training course that started yesterday.

The delegates, who include those from Laos and Cambodia, are here for a five-day programme that is being conducted by trainers from the Australian Federal Police and the CNB.
