Amazon.com projected profit in the current quarter that fell short of analysts’ estimates, suggesting the company continues to ramp up spending to support artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Operating income will be US$14 billion to US$18 billion in the period ending in March, the company said on Thursday.

Analysts, on average, projected US$18.2 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

First-quarter sales will be as much as US$155.5 billion, compared with an average estimate of US$158.6 billion.

Amazon stock falls after first quarter sales outlook disappoints

by Hamza Shaban and Daniel Howley

Beating on the top and bottom lines, but providing worse-than-anticipated Q1 guidance.

The company says it sees Q1 revenue of between $151 billion and $155 billion. Analysts were anticipating $158 billion.

Anticipates an unusually large, unfavorable impact of approximately $2.1 billion, or 150 basis points, from foreign exchange rates.

AWS Q4 revenue came in at $28.7 billion, just shy of expectations of $28.8 billion.

Expects to spend roughly $105 billion in capital expenditures in 2025 compared to US$75b in 2024.

On Thursday, Amazon reported results that bested expectations for its fourth quarter.

The company reported that earnings increased 86% year-over-year to $1.86 per share. Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.48 per share.

Revenue rose 10.5% year-over-year to $187.8 billion, topping estimates for $187.2 billion.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), disappointed Wall Street. For the quarter, AWS brought in $28.7 billion in revenue – a growth of 19%, just shy of expectations of $28.8 billion.

Meanwhile, advertising revenue jumped 18% to $17.3 billion but also fell short of expectations for $17.4 billion.

Announcing a planned $100 billion in capital expenditures next year.

On the note of looking ahead, I should mention that Amazon also issued weak guidance for its first quarter in a range of $151 billion and $155 billion. Analysts were expecting projections of $158 billion.

So, despite the earnings and revenue beats, the AWS miss combined with the capital expenditure plans weighed on investors. As a result, AMZN was down nearly 4% in Friday trading, as of this writing.

EXPECT TO SEE MORE FROM HEAVY INVESTMENT
A healthy set of 4Q24 results across its segments

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is much more involved in AI and data centers, due to AWS and its investments in AI startups like Anthropic. This is mainly why the stock has taken a bigger hit from the recent AI selloff.

The stock is down 17.7% in the past month and has declined below $200.

The stock looks pretty attractive at these levels as its cloud business is still hot, and the business has solid growth rates.

EPS is expected to grow 14.3% this year, and revenue growth is expected to be 9.6%.

You’re paying 32 times forward earnings, but investors have historically paid a big premium for AMZN stock.

The recent decline also leaves less downside risk, and the consensus price target of $260.65 implies 31.13% upside.

It might be a good idea to start buying the dip, though a prolonged AI selloff can obviously drag it down more.

Amazon: Cheapest Valuation in Company History

Amazon has long been a dominant force in e-commerce and cloud computing, two of the most transformative economic trends of the past two decades and which continue to be leading industries.

The company continues to reinvent itself as it expands into new, high-growth verticals, including artificial intelligence and digital advertising among others.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) remains the undisputed leader in cloud computing, generating the majority of the company’s operating income while benefiting from long-term secular growth in enterprise cloud adoption.

Additionally, Amazon is aggressively investing in AI infrastructure and services, including a major stake in Anthropic, the developer of one of the most widely used large language models (LLMs).

With AI adoption accelerating across industries, Amazon is well-positioned to capitalize on cloud-based AI workloads and enterprise AI integration.

From a valuation standpoint, Amazon is trading at historically low levels, making it an attractive opportunity for long-term investors.

The stock’s 10-year median forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is 87.6x, yet it currently trades at just 31.8x forward earnings, marking the cheapest valuation in the company’s recent history.

Given that earnings are projected to grow at an annualized rate of 22.85% over the next three to five years, this sharp multiple compression significantly limits downside risk while setting the stage for strong long-term returns.
