Why all plantation companies will continue to report more profit

by Koon Yew Yin

Indonesia plans to implement biodiesel with a mandatory 40% blend of palm oil-based fuel from Jan. 1 next year, a senior energy ministry official said recently, lifting prices of the vegetable oil to a more than two-week high.

Indonesia currently uses B35, which has a 35% blend of palm oil-based biodiesel, and the government had previously said it would increase the blend to 40% next year.

When implemented, the B40 mandate could increase biodiesel consumption to up to 16 MM kilolitres (kl) next year from a forecast of 13 MMkl this year, the energy ministry has estimated.

B40 will boost Indonesia's palm oil use for biodiesel to 13.9 metric MMt, from the estimated 11 MMt needed this year with B35, Indonesia's biofuel producers association APROBI had previously estimated.

Plantation – Regional Key Takeaways From UOB Kay Hian Palm Oil Seminar 2025
During the UOB Kay Hian Palm Oil Seminar 2025 held yesterday, our speakers forecast palm oil production in Malaysia to remain stagnant in 2025 but expect Indonesia’s output to rise.

Our speakers also flagged falling palm oil exports demand amid widened price premiums vs rival vegoils, and foresee inventories building up followed by price corrections later this year.

Maintain OVERWEIGHT on Indonesia and Singapore planters, and MARKET WEIGHT on Malaysian planters.

Top picks: Hap Seng Plantations and Bumitama.

Plantation – Malaysia
Waiting For The Dust To Settle

Maintain sector MARKET WEIGHT. CPO prices have begun to correct in 2Q25 as
earlier expected, with inventory levels likely to rise quickly over the next few
months’ peak harvesting season.

Given a lack of buying catalysts, planters’ equity performances are expected to be muted in the near term, with current sector multiples – at -0.5SD to five-year mean PE – still looking relatively fair.

We downgrade SD Guthrie from BUY to HOLD but maintain BUY on Hap Seng
Plantations for its inexpensive valuations.
