Strong high-end smartphone shipments to drive makers’ ASP/GPM recovery

Huawei’s return to the market and Xiaomi’s premiumisation efforts have increased competition in China’s premium segment, triggering a new spec-upgrade cycle and benefiting domestic component makers.

With XOV’s overseas shipments set to rise 20% yoy in 2024F, driven by improved sentiment and 5G
migration, we expect domestic component makers to benefit due to their dominant supplier status.

Apple’s iPhone shipments fell 13% yoy in 1Q24, mainly due to keen competition from Huawei and Xiaomi in China. We expect iPhone shipments to grow 1% yoy in 2024F with the launch of AI-capable iPhone 16.

We think Xiaomi will deliver a stronger-than-peers smartphone shipments growth of 16% yoy in 2024F, helped by stronger premium phone sales. We also believe Xiaomi will be successful in its EV business.

AAC Tech will benefit from the AI-capable iPhone launch due to its involvement in iPhone 16 microphone upgrades. We expect AAC Tech to post a 25% revenue growth and 3% pts GPM improvement in FY24F.

We maintain our Overweight call on the China smartphone sector, with unchanged top picks of Xiaomi and AAC Tech.

China: Apple's iPhones hit the comeback trail

The number of smartphone sold in China rose by 25.5 percent to 22.7 million units last month.

Apple's smartphone shipments in China rose 52 percent in April from a year ago amid a flurry of discounts from retail partners.

Apple and its Chinese resellers have been cutting prices since the start of 2024, and those deals are extending into the sale season that accompanies the June 18th shopping festival.
