Beware of AI-driven crimes

Recently, a deepfake video of a Malaysian leader promoting a get-rich-quick scheme has been circulating on social media.

AI could also be used in advanced video and audio manipulation that can lead to potential identity theft and the creation of deepfake videos.

They could use such deepfakes in bogus kidnap-for-ransom cases, where they trick families into believing they have kidnapped a loved one, while some could even use it to create lewd or pornographic images of victims that could in turn be used to blackmail them.

CyberSecurity M’sia warns of impersonation, scam activities on WhatsApp

There were fraudulent activities using the application, with the perpetrator posing as someone known to the victim before sending a link and asking the victim to click on it.

The victim will subsequently lose access to their WhatsApp account once they click on the link.

“The scammer will then take over the hacked WhatsApp account and use the victim’s identity to commit fraud. They will impersonate the victim by sending messages to the victim’s contacts via the WhatsApp account”.

“We advise people not to click on any link received via WhatsApp. Do not make any money transfer until you have confirmed and verified with your contacts,” it said.

Man uses fake profiles to catfish victims and swindle them out of RM4.66mil, US feds say

He created fake online profiles to swindle people out of more than US$1mil (RM4.66mil).

The man worked with others to create fake online profiles, which he used to “express romantic interest” in people.

Once the victim believed he or she was in a romantic relationship with the person pictured in the online profile, the co-conspirators, using false pretences, would convince the victims to send money by mail or by wire transfer.

Directors held over investment scam after 57 reports lodged

Three directors of a company called Giganation GIB Bhd have been detained in an investigation into an alleged investment scam resulting in RM3.9mil in losses.

Investigations showed the company started operations in 2017 and conducted real-estate development, asset development and liability management.

In a separate case, seven individuals, including four foreigners, were detained in a raid at an investment scam call centre.

Scammers now posing as NSRC officers

The scammers would call victims and introduce themselves as NSRC officers.

“They would tell the victims their phone numbers would be terminated following reports that they had sent illegal web links and fraud messages”.

“The scammers would then connect the call to another individual posing as an investigating officer.

“The victims would be instructed to transfer money into a bank account for the purpose of the investigation,” he added.

7 victims lose $27k to phishing scam involving fake Domino’s Pizza websites

These websites had similar layouts and Web addresses to those of the company, such as domino-plza.com and order.domino.piza.com.

Domino’s genuine website address is dominos.com.sg .

The police advised the public to add the ScamShield application on their devices and enable security features, such as two-factor or multi-factor authentication for banks and Internet banking transaction limits.

The public can check for signs of scams using the ScamShield Bot on WhatsApp. They can also visit scamalert.sg or call the Anti-Scam Helpline on 1800-722-6688.
