Scam cases on the rise in Petaling Jaya, say cops

By DHARSHIKA KARUNA NITHI

Many were still falling for love and loan scams as well as Macau and parcel delivery scams.

“If you come across cheap smartphones being sold on social media, don’t be deceived by the low prices.

“Exercise caution when making other online purchases as well,”.

“Do not click on unauthorised website links that you may receive on your phone.

“If you encounter a scam, call the hotline immediately and report the suspicious activity.”

“The caller impersonated a Pos Laju employee and said there was a parcel for me but I had to pay a certain amount to get it.

“When the person mentioned that the matter involved the Sarawak police, I realised it was a scam,” he said.

Those who encounter scams should call the National Scam Response Centre hotline at 997 or lodge a report at the nearest police station.

Scammers con Booking.com users by sending messages through its in-app chat function

Both types of scams involved the criminals sending victims fake website links, and asking them to provide personal and banking details, such as one-time passwords and credit card numbers.

In some of the cases, victims received a prompt from the malicious websites to make payments to confirm the reservation.

Earlier in 2023, fraudsters posed as hotel representatives and contacted victims through messaging platform WhatsApp.

Recently, conmen have adopted methods that are harder for victims to verify – sending e-mails or messages using official accounts of hotels directly through Booking.com’s in-app chat function.

A spokesman for Booking.com told The Straits Times that some of its accommodation partners had their accounts compromised after being targeted by phishing e-mails.

“If you ever receive a payment message that raises concerns, we strongly urge you to verify the accommodation’s payment policy, easily accessible on the property listing page, or reach out to our 24/7 customer service team for immediate assistance,” the spokesman said.

SG police: At least 25 people lost RM132,200 since October through parcel delivery scams

By THIAN WEN LI

Scammers would get the victim’s personal details by pretending to ask for delivery payment of supposedly purchased items.

Victims would receive text or e-mail messages, containing phishing links, that ask for additional payment for the delivery of their purchased items. These messages are designed to look as though they were sent by postage or e-commerce companies, such as SingPost.

Victims who click on these links are led to fake websites that require them to provide their personal details, which could include banking credentials.

Delivery charges are usually charged upfront when purchases are made.
