Single mum in SG who lost over RM307,000 to a job scam thought she could earn RM62,000 in a week

By CHRISTINE TAN

Lee was told that she would get all her money back after completing 60 orders, with a 20% commission.

Singsale is an ecommerce website owned by MySale Group, a subsidiary of British retail conglomerate Frasers Group. However, the transactions Lee carried out were on a separate platform.

Ivy let Lee use her own account first to experience the system. In two days, she used S$1,000 (RM3,451) in Ivy’s account to place orders and received S$1,200 (RM4,141).

Pleased with the payout, Ms Lee continued with the second set of orders, this time using her own account.

Someone claiming to be a staff member of the system gave her instructions on the orders and bank accounts to transfer payments to.

Scammed by ‘jobs in Peru’

They were promised good jobs in Lima, the capital of Peru, where the economy is growing. But, once in South America, they become victims of human traffickers.

They were then at the mercy of Macau Scam syndicate members who ordered them to impersonate bank or public officials to trick others into disclosing their personal banking details or transfer money into a third-party account.

Activists and government officials say hundreds of Malaysians have been lured by lucrative job offers in South-East Asian nations such as Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, only to end up being forced to defraud online users with Internet romances and cryptocurrency schemes.

Kidnapped in Thailand: When 'friends' sell you to human trafficking syndicates

Someone in a WhatsApp group he was in suggested a business opportunity while he was vacationing in Chiang Mai, Thailand. On top of it, the person, whom David described as "more like an acquaintance”, offered to pay for the trip for him and a friend.

David first got an inkling something was wrong when Steven failed to show up to meet him and his friend at the Chiang Mai International Airport as promised. Instead, there was a taxi driver holding a sign with their names on it.

The driver had brought a friend along which David thought was odd but did not examine further. He thought they were both Myanmar nationals.

Once they were in the car, the driver’s friend pulled out a gun and forced them to hand over their passports and mobile phones.

Company auditor loses RM1.48 million to non-existent investment

The victim saw the advertisement by the New York-based company on Facebook on May 2

She followed the advertisement link and subsequently got an explanation about the stock investment and then made payments in several transactions amounting to RM1.48 million into several accounts provided by the syndicate.

"However, after the money was deposited, she claimed not getting the profit as promised, but was asked to increase her investment to enable her to withdraw the money,".
