The victim, in his 20s, was longing for a “sex date" and had downloaded the ‘Sex Dating App’, which was supposed to let him choose the woman of his dreams. But there was a catch.
The user would need to carry out some simple in-app tasks that would allow him to not just get the woman of his choice, but some cash incentives too.
In another scam, a teacher in her 40s withdrew all her savings, pawned her jewellery and withdrew her deposits totalling more than RM140,000 to help her “online lover”.
In yet a third, unrelated case, a grandmother in her 80s was duped by her own family members into withdrawing and transferring her savings totalling almost RM250,000 on the pretext of updating her bank account.
It is learnt that the woman’s grandson and his wife had taken her to two banks in Batu Pahat supposedly to update her accounts and got the woman to sign off on some documents.
