JB woman loses RM140,000 in love scam

The victim received a text from an unknown man in March.

“The text was sent through the Messenger app, and the suspect said he wanted to get to know the victim.

“They then communicated via WhatsApp after the woman fell for the sham”.

The suspect also informed the victim that he was coming to Malaysia to manage his late father's will.

Johor teachers fall prey to scams

64 of them being duped of their life savings.

The total losses amounted to RM2.5mil in the past few months.

It is learnt that scam syndicates have been impersonating enforcement personnel targeting mainly female teachers. The pretext used includes insurance fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, criminal court cases and dubious investment schemes.

Sources said the scammers usually pretend to be policemen, court officials, insurance officers, Bank Negara officials, prosecutors and income tax officers.

It is learnt that some of the teachers were so afraid of being arrested or charged in court that they were willing to take up bank loans to “park” money in mule accounts.

Recounted how Mali convinced her to venture into crypto trading. He provided her with a download link to what seemed to be the legitimate app SoFi, complete with two-factor authentication and customer service.

SoFi, a reputable provider of loans and select banking services in the U.S. and Hong Kong, often becomes a target for impersonation by scammers.

When Datta later attempted to withdraw her funds from the app, she received a message requiring her to pay a 10% personal tax first.

Seeking assistance, she reached out to her lawyer brother, who, together with a private investigator, determined that she had fallen victim to a crypto investment scam known as "pig butchering."

Cops bust international online gambling, investment syndicate

The syndicate used an office in Jelutong to promote gambling platforms to those in Nepal, Singapore and Malaysia.

Preliminary checks also found elements of online gambling using the links ‘bwc88nep.com’ and ‘merc.adminbwc88ags.com’.

The syndicate used the premises for creating advertisements (graphic designing) and distributing them (on social media), promoting gambling platforms to those in Nepal, Singapore and Malaysia.

Teacher and manager lose RM360,000 to fake job scams

Received a WhatsApp message about a part-time job selling products for men and women via an online platform.

The teacher was also asked to make some purchases using her own money to be eligible for a commission.

According to sources, the syndicate would use terms such as “Amazon” to convince victims that it was a genuine platform that paid out good commission.

Another case - come across an advertisement via social media.

Sources said the woman was promised lucrative returns if she spent her own money first to make some bookings and that she would later be reimbursed along with a commission.

“They lured her by promising almost 20% commission. The victim carried out numerous transactions totalling more than RM250,000”.
