N. America 1Q Smartphone Shipment +3.7%, Apple's Mkt Shr 51%: Canalys

North American smartphone shipments burgeoned by 3.7% year-on-year to 39 million units in the first quarter, data from Canalys showed.

Helped by vibrant demand for iPhone 13, Apple (AAPL.US) tracked a 19% smartphone shipment growth, with a market share of 51%.

Samsung shored its shipment up by 1%, catering to mid-range and high-end consumers through its S series and A series launch. Its market share reached 27%.

Global smartphone shipments to decline

Sunny Optical Technology (2382) expects global smartphone shipments in 2022 will decline by 7.9 percent to 1.22 billion compared to 2021 amid the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, global inflation and weak consumption.

Among the smartphone shipment regions, China's shipments are estimated to fall 16.9 percent year-on-year to 260 million units while Europe's smartphone shipments are also expected for fall by 15 percent to 170 million units, due to the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Meanwhile, the average number of lenses per phone will continue to decrease due to high production costs brought by intense market competition.

Gartner Slashes 2022E Global Phone Sales to -7.1% YoY

In its report, technological research and consulting firm Gartner lowered the global handset sales forecast from 1.6 billion units to 1.46 billion units for 2022, representing a 7.1% fall from 1.57 billion units in 2021.

The handset delivery volume is expected to drop 5.8% YoY worldwide, and plunge 18.3% YoY in Greater China.

Canalys: 2Q Global Smartphone Shipment Vol. Slumps 9% YoY; Samsung Leads Mkt with 21% Shr

Over the second quarter of 2022, the global smartphone shipment volume contracted by 9% YoY as the market demand was eroded by volatile economic conditions and regional uncertainties, according to data released by Canalys.

Benefitting from the stronger supply of the A series low-end models, Samsung led the global smartphone market with a share of 21%, which increased by 3 pps YoY.

On the back of the robust demand for iPhone 13, Apple (AAPL.US) occupied the second place with a market share of 17%, up 3 ppts YoY.

XIAOMI-W (01810.HK), OPPO and Vivo, continued to face market demand corrections in mainland China, causing their market shares to drop by 3 ppts/ 1 ppt/ 1 ppt on a YoY basis, to 14%/ 10%/ 9%, the report added.

Canalys: 2Q Global Smartphone Shipment Vol. Slides 9% YoY; Samsung Leads Mkt

Over the second quarter of 2022, the global smartphone shipment volume contracted by 9% YoY to 287 million units, reaching the lowest level on a quarterly basis since 2Q20, according to data released by Canalys.

Over the period, Samsung led the market with a share of 21%, up 3 ppts YoY. Apple (AAPL.US) trailed behind in second place with a market share of 17%, likewise up 3 ppts YoY.

XIAOMI-W (01810.HK), whose shipment volume plummeted 25% YoY to 39.6 million units, occupied the third place with a market share of 14%, representing a YoY contraction of 3 ppts.

HSBC Global Research Cuts TPs on CHINA MOBILE (00941.HK), CHINA UNICOM (00762.HK)

HSBC Global Research expressed concern on the corporate service development of Chinese telecoms in 1H22, with the biggest potential variability.

Meanwhile, core network business was expected to be relatively stable, underpinned by migration to 5G tariffs and higher-speed broadband.

The broker raised its financial forecasts on CHINA TELECOM (00728.HK) to reflect estimate-beating corporate service growth. It kept the target price on CHINA TELECOM at $4.1 with intact rating Buy.

The target prices on CHINA MOBILE (00941.HK) and CHINA UNICOM (00762.HK) were slightly trimmed to $70 and $3.9, with respective rating of Buy and Hold.

The active installed base of iPhones surpassed the 50% mark in the quarter ending June, while 150 other mobile brands using Google's Android operating system, led by Samsung and Lenovo, accounted for the other half.
