Uber: Should You Ride This Stock’s Bullish Momentum?

“Capital is drying up, which is ultimately good for them. This is a positive inflection point in their business. This is not a business that can sustain many players.”

Ride-hailing demand is returning in the post-pandemic environment.

Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization are expected to jump from $130 to $150 million. Those figures represent a solid improvement from the $100 to $130 million Uber projected when it announced fourth-quarter results last month.

“Our mobility business is bouncing back from Omicron much faster than we expected. Whether for travel, commuting, or going out at night, we’re seeing healthy and growing demand across all use cases, highlighting just how eager consumers are to get moving again.”

Uber Stock Slumps As Lyft Drags Ride-Sharing Lower On Surging Cost Hit To Profit Outlook

"Our driver base is at a post-pandemic high and is more engaged on Uber than on other platforms,: said CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

"Importantly, we expect this trend to continue without significant incremental incentive investments."

by MARTIN BACCARDAX

Uber said its adjusted loss for the three months ending in March came in at $3.04 per share, or $5.9 billion, although most of that was linked to accounting changes linked to the group's stakes in China-based ride hailing company Didi Global (DIDI).

March quarter revenues, Uber said, rose 136% from last year to $6.9 billon, well ahead of the Street consensus forecast of $6.13 billion.

Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER)

Uber reported surging revenue on its earnings call Wednesday.

The company boasted $6.85 billion in revenue compared to the $6.13 billion that was estimated.

As reported by CNBC:

Uber said it expects to generate “meaningful positive cash flows” for full-year 2022, which would mark a first for the company.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a statement that April mobility gross bookings exceeded 2019 levels across all regions and use cases.

But while Uber reported revenue growth, the company also reported a net loss of $5.9 billion for the first quarter. Uber cites its investments in Southeast Asian delivery company Grab, autonomous vehicle company Aurora and Chinese ride sharing company Didi.

During his remarks, Uber CFO Nelson Chai said the company has the liquidity to maintain its positions and wait for a better time to sell.

Uber, Waymo team up to get driverless trucks rolling

SAN FRANCISCO: Uber and Google’s autonomous vehicle unit Waymo yesterday said they are joining forces to get driverless trucks hauling cargo on roads across the US.

Due to the vast distances between American cities and with truck transport key to the economy, companies see self-driving as a way to cut costs and reduce risk.

Waymo will allow its technology to mesh with an Uber Freight platform that connects truckers with loads in a spin on how Uber lets people summon rides using smartphone apps.

“Uber Freight’s network of shippers, carriers, and marketplace technology is a great match for the Waymo Driver,” Waymo head of commercialisation for trucking Charlie Jatt said in a statement.

Carriers that buy trucks equipped with Waymo systems will be able to opt in to having the vehicles deployed as “autonomous assets” on the Uber Freight network, the companies said.

The firms will also explore together the potential for creating hubs where cargo is easily handed off from self-driving trucks to human truckers.

“Both companies envision a future where autonomous trucks tackle the long-haul portion of driving, easing some of the burden of the increasing demand for freight while also enabling drivers to shift into short-haul jobs,” they said in the release.

Before driverless trucks are allowed onto roads and highways, however, multiple tests must still be conducted to ensure they are safe.

Waymo has been testing self-driving trucks in a handful of US states.

“Uber Freight’s extensive, efficient, and reliable digital network is essential to making autonomous trucks a reality,” said unit head Lior Ron.

The Freight unit has been steadily growing, according to quarterly earnings releases.

Uber Joins The Race For Nationwide Food Shipping

The company is also testing self-driving cars for future deliveries.

The company also announced in May that it would partner with stadiums so customers can avoid long concessions lines, instead waiting in their seats to get a notification to go pick up their food when it's ready.

Self-driving vehicles and robot delivery are also being tested in two pilot programs in Los Angeles.

Uber Technologies (UBER)

Uber now operates in over 10,000 cities in 72 countries, boasts 115 million monthly active users taking 19 million rides daily, and has paid out a cumulative $180 billion to passenger and delivery drivers.

The company’s share price is down 45% year-to-date, although revenues are up. The top line in 1Q22 came in at $6.9 billion, for a year-over-year increase of 136%. This number came in higher than the gross bookings; bookings rose y/y by 35%, to reach $26.4 billion.

While Uber has usually posted net quarterly losses, the loss in 1Q22 was unusually large at $3.04 per share. This was a dramatic increase from the 6-cent loss of the year-ago quarter.

Uber management attribute the loss to a one-time hit, a $5.6 billion pre-tax charge, relating to various of the company’s equity investments.

“We continue to believe Uber is emerging stronger from the pandemic as it focuses on product innovation (Upfront Fares, UberX Share, Hailables) & cross platform advantages (Uber One, accelerated earner onboarding)…

We recognize Delivery could be more at risk from inflation but Mobility will be the bigger mover on the bottom line. Uber remains a top pick”.

As a ‘top pick,’ Uber gets an Overweight (i.e. Buy) rating from Anmuth, who also sets a price target of $48, showing his confidence in a 108% upside for the coming year.

These include 27 Buys against just 3 Holds, for a Strong Buy consensus, and the $46.86 average price target implies ~103% upside from its current trading price of $23.09.

Uber Stock Erupts on Strong Beat, Analysts Expect Positive Market Reaction

By Senad Karaahmetovic

Uber said it recorded revenue of $8.07 billion to easily beat the consensus of $7.39 billion with gross bookings rising 33% and coming ahead of expectations.

Uber reported an adjusted EBITDA of $364 million to crush the average analyst estimate of $265.9 million.

The company attributed a loss per share of $1.33 to “a $1.7 billion net headwind (pre-tax) relating to Uber’s equity investments, primarily due to aggregate unrealized losses related to the revaluation of Uber’s Aurora, Grab, and Zomato stakes.”

“We became a free cash flow generator in Q2, as we continued to scale our asset-light platform, and we will continue to build on that momentum,” said Nelson Chai, Uber’s CFO.

For the ongoing quarter, Uber sees an adjusted EBITDA between $440 million to $470 million, much better than the consensus of $391.6 million.

A Needham & Company analyst stated:

“Delivery bookings were below expectations in 2Q22, likely driven by weakness outside the U.S., which could be a reason for the lower than expected bookings guide.

Given the stronger than expected adj. EBITDA results and guide, we expect shares to react favorable as we suspect current value levels express market skepticism on reaching '23 and '24 consensus expectations.”

Similarly, a Goldman Sachs analyst reflected positively on Uber’s earnings report.

“We expect investors to have a positive reaction to Uber’s Q2 ’22 earnings report, as most metrics (in terms of both its reported Q2 metrics and forward commentary) were solid vs expectations,” the analyst said.
