According to FactSet, a record number of companies have provided positive guidance for the second quarter.

As a result, analysts have upped second-quarter earnings estimates by 6.7% in the past three months, and the S&P 500 is now expected to achieve 62.8% average annual earnings growth.

Second-quarter revenue is forecast to grow 19.5% year-over-year.

Earnings for S&P 500 companies expected to be up a sharp 65%

Second-quarter earnings reporting season gets underway in the week ahead and eye-popping results could validate a market that continues to easily shake off any concerns on its steady march to record high after record highs.

The second quarter’s profit for S&P 500 companies is expected to be up 65% from the same quarter a year ago in the depths of the pandemic, according to Refinitiv.

The growth will be led by a near 570% increase in profits for industrials.

US corporate earnings mostly solid , so far

The latest round of corporate earnings is winding down, and nearly 90% of companies in the S&P 500 have reported their latest results, AP reports.

Analysts expect the U.S. and global economies to continue growing but have cautioned that the resurgent virus could slow down the pace.

US 3Q Earnings

Analysts expect third quarter earnings for the S&P 500 to increase a heady 27.6%, per data from FactSet.

If that number is hit or surpassed, it would mark the third highest year-over-year earnings growth rate reported by the index dating back to 2010.

3Q US Earnings

Third quarter earnings will kick into gear next week, when we hear from the big banks.

We've already heard from 21 S&P 500 companies and most are talking about inflation.

They're talking about labor costs. They're talking about supply chain disruptions. They're talking about freight costs. They're talking about commodity costs. And they're talking about covid costs.

Peak Earnings

According to estimates tracked by FactSet Research Systems, profits for companies in the S&P 500 are expected to rise 27.6% from the third quarter of 2020.

The concern, however, is about diminishing growth rates going forward.

FactSet said in a report that earnings are expected to increase by a still-healthy 21.5% in the fourth quarter but he added that annual growth will be just 5.3% for the first quarter of 2022 and 9.6% for all of next year.
