Uber app in US to enable users to book Covid-19 vaccines and rental cars

by Tina Bellon

Customers would be able book an appointment at a Walgreens pharmacy to receive a vaccine and an Uber ride to travel there.

US customers can book rental cars through the Uber app, with Uber offering up to 10% of the rental cost as a credit to the user to spend on other Uber services.

Users in Washington DC can have their rental car delivered to and collected from their home, after paying a fee to Uber, which will rollout the service nationwide this year.

Uber beat estimates on the top line and dramatically improved its net losses in its first quarter but missed on revenue.

Shares initially gained in after-hours trading before dipping more than 4.5%.

Overall, Uber’s net loss was $108 million, a tremendous improvement from a $968 million loss in its fourth quarter of 2020.

But that was largely due to a $1.6 billion gain from the sale of its self-driving unit, ATG.

Uber’s operating loss was still high for the quarter at more than $1.5 billion.

Uber Falls After Revenue Miss

Shares of Uber Technologies UBER fell in premarket trading Thursday after the ride hailing and delivery company posted a decline in first-quarter revenue and said spending on recruiting drivers will impact second-quarter earnings.

Bonuses and other incentives to get drivers back on the road will reduce the rate Uber takes from fares by about 20% this quarter, the company said in a conference call with analysts, Bloomberg reported.

Uber reported a first-quarter loss of 6 cents a share on revenue of $2.9 billion. Analysts were expecting a loss of 56 cents a share on revenue of $3.27 billion.

Uber previously has said it plans to turn a profit by the end of the year, and it was able to cut its loss in the first quarter to $108 million from $968 million in the fourth quarter.

Gross bookings in the first quarter were 24%. Delivery gross bookings jumped 166% year over year to $12.46 billion.

The stock fell 3.58% to $49.35 in premarket trading Thursday.
