Now’s a Good Time to Buy Amazon (AMZN) Stock

by Louis Navellier

When Amazon bought out Whole Foods, this move might have been considered speculative at the time. Yet, today we can view it as one of Amazon’s most successful ventures. It’s the sort of forward thinking that’s behind all of the greatest growth stocks.

The company is reportedly in talks to possibly buy a $20-billion stake in Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd. That company is part of Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries. If the deal goes through as planned, Amazon could own a 40% stake in Reliance Retail Ventures. This, in itself, would diversify Amazon’s business in a big way and would turn a competitor into an ally.

Amazon: Amazon's sales grew 37% to $96 billion year-over-year (yes, you read that correctly).

Profit increased 197% to more than $6 billion.

"There is no doubt that Amazon's latest results show it continues to be a winner from disruption caused by the pandemic," Neil Saunders, analyst at GlobalData Retail, told clients.

Amazon (AMZN)

Amazon’s net sales jumped 37%, year-over-year, to $96.1 billion and topped analysts’ estimates of $92.6 billion by 3.8%.

The company’s cloud division, Amazon Web Services, grew year-over-year sales in the quarter by 29% to $11.6 billion.

Earnings of $12.40 per share soared 192% from a year prior, and demolished analysts’ expectations of $7.40 per share by 67%.

The company expects fourth-quarter sales from $112 billion to $121 billion, which would represent from 28% to 38% growth from the fourth quarter of 2019.

Operating income is expected to be between $1.0 billion and $4.5 billion, compared with $3.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019.

The company attributes its wide range in expected income in part to an expected $4 billion in costs for testing, cleaning and social distancing steps taken to address COVID-19.

Investors sold shares Friday on the uncharacteristic uncertainty from Amazon, with the stock down about 4%.

Analysts anticipate revenue will soar in the upcoming quarter to $117.2 billion, while earnings should dip to $7.72 per share.

Amazon.com (AMZN)

E-commerce and cloud services are two businesses that have thrived in a difficult 2020, and Amazon is the U.S. leader in both categories.

In the third quarter, Amazon reported 37.4% revenue growth, and net income nearly tripled compared with a year ago.

Unfortunately, investors seem to be cashing out of megacap tech stocks and rotating to underperforming value stocks.

In addition, the European Commission recently issued a charge sheet against Amazon related to alleged antitrust violations.

Short sellers may be betting that Amazon will run into issues with U.S. antitrust regulators in the near future as well.

Dusaniwsky says Amazon has been the most costly short trade of the year so far in 2020, with Amazon short sellers suffering a combined $5.2 billion in year-to-date, mark-to-market losses.

However, short sellers appear to be digging in heading into the end of the year, adding $827.6 million to their positions in the past 30 days and bringing Amazon's total short interest to $9.78 billion.

Amazon (AMZN)

Amazon has been one of the best-performing growth stocks of all time, but Bank of America analyst Justin Post says the stock is still undervalued.

Post says investors should anticipate a deceleration in growth this year as Amazon laps the beginning of the health crisis.

However, he says Amazon's results in recent quarters demonstrated just how powerful and profitable its online retail, cloud services and advertising businesses can be in the long term.

Post says Amazon Web Services revenue growth could get a boost from a rebound in IT spending.

Bank of America has a "buy" rating and a $4,150 price target for AMZN stock.

Amazon (AMZN)

Amazon’s first quarter net sales jumped 44%, year-over-year, to $108.5 billion and topped analysts’ estimates of $104.6 billion by 3.7%.

The company now has over a third more Prime members, or 200 million members, than it did in January 2020.

Online store net sales of $52.9 billion and Amazon Web Services net sales of $13.5 billion bested analysts’ estimates.

Earnings of $15.79 per share more than tripled, year-over-year, and demolished analysts’ expectations of $9.64 per share by 64%.

The company expects second-quarter sales from $110 billion to $116 billion, which would represent from 24% to 30% growth from the second quarter of 2020. Operating income is expected to be between $4.5 billion and $8.0 billion, compared with $5.8 billion in the second quarter of 2020.

Shares soared over 2% after Amazon reported last Friday, but the stock is down nearly 4% over the past five days.

Analysts anticipate revenue will increase in the upcoming quarter to $108.9 billion, while earnings should dip to $10.99 per share.
