Philippines typhoon toll exceeds 500

At least 540 people have been confirmed dead in the Philippines following the deadliest typhoon to hit the country this year, rescue officials said Friday.

Regional military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lyndon Paniza told AFP the region's armed forces had retrieved 506 bodies on the east coast of the southern island of Mindanao and around the southern town of New Bataan, AFP reports.

The civil defence office in Manila said 23 other people were killed elsewhere in Mindanao, along with 11 in the central Visayan islands.

The government agency said 383 people remained missing while the number of survivors who have sought refuge at government shelters has grown to more than 306,000.

Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman said people who had lost their homes and livelihoods were flocking in droves to the crowded camps for food and shelter.

Beyond the BRIC: Are the Philippines the Next Frontier? By Ari Charney

Over the past year, I’ve interviewed several portfolio managers who helm some of the top-performing international and emerging market funds.

And when the conversation eventually diverges from the usual BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) names, one of the more intriguing countries on their radar is the Philippines.

Best Investments 2013: Buy the Top-Performing Emerging Market of Q1 By Tony Daltorio

While the Standard & Poor's 500 Index 10% first-quarter gain was great, it wasn't the world's best.

One of the standout performances in 2013's first quarter was in a market that's off many investors' radar screens: the Philippines.

The Philippine stock market, valued at about $236 billion, rose by 17.8% in the first quarter.

The Philippines said Friday it was aiming to lift more than 10 million people out of poverty in less than two years, and make an enduring impact on lessening one of Asia's worst rich-poor divides.

Cut exposure in PH stocks, HSBC tells clients

British banking giant HSBC has switched its call on Philippine equities to “underweight” from “overweight,” citing lofty valuations relative to the growing attractiveness of some other emerging markets in the region.

Herald van der Linde, Hong Kong-based head of equity strategy for Asia-Pacific at HSBC, said in a briefing in Manila on Friday that while he still liked the Philippine story, “it’s just too expensive.”

On the other hand, Van der Linde said: “If I buy anything in China, it’s half the price.”

For the second quarter, HSBC’s tactical call was to overweight China (from underweight) and to remain overweight on Indonesia and Taiwan. The call on the Philippines was cut to underweight from overweight only five months ago.
