Do this to save the most money on airfare by Dr. David Eifrig

The next time you’re booking a domestic flight, try booking it 54 days in advance.

According to CheapAir.com – a website that finds the best travel deals – 54 days before a trip is on average when you will get the best price. The lowest fares can be anywhere between one month to three-and-a-half months before the departure date.

The most expensive times to book on average are the two days before the trip or when flights first go on sale. These are the times when airlines don’t use competitive pricing

If you don’t want to stress over trying to pick the best time to book your flight, CheapAir can help you find the best airfares. And if the price of the airfare falls after you book your ticket, you’ll get a travel credit for the difference up to $100.

How to Avoid Getting Sick When You're on Vacation

Sleep is going to be your number one line of defense against colds or flus while you're on the road.

Earplugs and sleep masks are great for improving the quality of your sleep and they don't cost very much.

Your second line of defense is what Dr. Frank Lipman calls nature's antibiotic.

He's referring to oil of oregano. This superoil is extremely anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial.

It works wonders when you feel a cold or upset stomach coming on, says Dr. Lipman.

Pay up front

If you’re looking to save some cash on your hotel bill, try paying before you go.

Some hotels, including some Marriot Hotels offer discounts of up to 50% if you pay two to three weeks in advance.

It’s called an Advance Purchase Rate and it can save you money!

Antibacterial Wipes

I don't usually recommend using antibacterial wipes.

For one thing, they help promote antibiotic-resistant bacteria. But when you're on a plane -- well, that looks like a different story.

A recent study found disease germs can linger for days on airline cabin seat backs and armrests.

The one that lived longest was the dreaded superbug MRSA. It survived an entire week on seat back pocket material. Another really scary pathogen, a strain of E coli, stayed alive for 96 hours on fabric from an armrest.

Such microbes "pose a risk of transmission via skin contact," said the researcher who presented the findings.

Research is continuing with other types of disease germs, including the ones that cause tuberculosis. And future plans call for looking into "effective cleaning and disinfection strategies" for airline cabins.

But until they find that "effective" way to clean to clean the inside of a plane, it looks like we have to take matters into our own hands -- literally!

So even if you also don't typically use germ wipes, get some before your next plane trip and wipe down any areas you may be touching during the trip.

Because even if people in the seats next to you seem healthy, you never know about the ones who were sitting there before you got on.

U.S. tightens security on electronics at overseas airports

(Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Security Administration will not allow cellphones or other electronic devices on U.S.-bound planes at some overseas airports if the devices are not charged up, the agency said on Sunday.

The new measure is part of the TSA's effort announced last week to boost security amid concerns that Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and the Islamist Nusra Front, al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, are plotting to blow up an airliner, U.S. officials said.

As part of the increased scrutiny at certain airports, security agents may ask travelers to turn on their electronic devices at checkpoints and if they do not have power, the devices will not be allowed on planes, the TSA said.

A U.S. source familiar with the matter said laptop computers are among the devices security screeners may require passengers to turn on.

U.S. officials are concerned that a cellphone, tablet, laptop or other electronic device could be used as a bomb.

U.S. officials singled out smartphones including iPhones made by Apple Inc and Galaxy phones made by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd for extra security checks on U.S.-bound direct flights from Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The TSA also called for closer checks on travelers' shoes.

If you fly often, we have some bad news

Feeling unloved already, coach passengers may have more to grouse about as Boeing Co. (BA) shoehorns 11 more seats into the economy cabin of a new 737 model.

In an airline industry where every square inch of space is mined for revenue, the big squeeze is on in the back of the plane. Carriers are changing the shape of lavatories, streamlining galley areas where they store drink carts and adding “slimline” seats with thinner padding to shave centimeters off the distance between rows.

At the same time, they’re making life more comfortable for high-fare customers in business class by installing comfy flatbed seats and 15-inch (38-centimeter) video monitors.
