Flash floods hit condo carpark

SINGAPORE - The heavy downpour yesterday caused the basement carpark of Varsity Park condominium, in West Coast to be flooded.

The bumper-high water level was reminiscent of another case last year at Tessarina condominium in Bukit Timah, when luxury and sports cars in the basement carpark were submerged.

A tenant at Varsity Park condo who was interviewed by the Straits Times, said this is the first incidence of flooding in the development.

Flash floods hit various parts of Singapore at 1.40pm yesterday, with the highest rainfall recorded as 91.4mm at Kent Ridge in the West Coast area.

Many other areas islandwide were also affected by the downpour.

The heavy rain brought down a tree in Tiong Bahru yesterday evening, which landed on a taxi. No one was injured in the accident.

Ankle-deep flood waters were also reported at a bus stop and hawker centre in Clementi, and a void deck in Pasir Ris.

Long-term plan for flood control needed
by Hoe Yeen Nie

SINGAPORE - The PUB is studying the possibility of a new diversion canal off the Stamford Canal in Orchard Road, which saw flooding in recent years.

The water agency is also assessing the need for a retention pond in the area.

Dr Balakrishnan acknowledges that social media has become a place for the public to air their frustrations about the floods, and sees this as a tool that can help the authorities.

"We're not trying to hide anything. If a flash flood has occurred, it has occurred. What I want to know is where it is, how deep the water was, what was affected, were there local problems, is there something which I can fix. If it's something I can fix, I will fix it. In fact, I should."

He added: "This is actually, I believe, a model for how Singapore and Singaporeans have to solve problems in the future - through transparency, through sharing, through collaborating ...

( Hmmm..... Is he saying that currently, there's no transparency, no sharing and no collaboration ? )

Wetter days ahead for Singapore due to monsoon surge

Singapore can expect intermittent moderate to heavy rain from Dec 24 to 26 due to a monsoon surge.

A monsoon surge refers to the mounting north-easterly winds blowing from the South China Sea during the north-east moonsoon season from December to January.

They result in bouts of prolonged widespread moderate to heavy rain lasting two to five days, with occasionally windy conditions and cooler temperatures.

High tides of up to 3.2m are also expected. Flash floods may occur if heavy rain coincides with high tides.

To get the latest weather reports, the public can check out the NEA website (www.nea.gov.sg), its iPhone application (myEnv), twitter @NEAsg or call its weather forecast hotline at 6542 7788.
