Thanks Kennynah,

Very good explanation indeed, appreciate it.

Well since I don't really need a smart phone for work, I guess I can do without one for now. :D

Also if you are on the road a lot. you can check emails, stock quotes. postings in the forum etc.. in between meetings.

So it depends on your lifestyle and how much time you spent on the road.
It's all about "how much you made when you were right" & "how little you lost when you were wrong"

From Reuters:

Research In Motion Limited to Acquire QNX Software Unit From Harman International
Friday, 9 Apr 2010 09:00am EDT

Harman International and Research In Motion Limited announced that the two companies have reached an agreement for Research In Motion Limited to acquire QNX Software Systems. The deal is anticipated to close within 35-45 days. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Note:
- QNX is an embeddable real-time OS; think of the computer programs in cars
- lots of patents in it; again typical tech firing power when it comes to lawsuits
- what else?

imho, RIMM will become a second class email smartphone... it will start losing out to push email solutions agnostic phones... look, you can even configure your iPhone today to receive your company and personal emails.. so, why would corporations spend 10-100s of thousands setting up a blackberry server?

they were very useful 10 years ago...but in the more recent years, they have started to lose market share...

all you need do is to look at what many of your corporate friends are carrying...blackberries or other smartphones.....

RIMM stock price is also very reflective of the reality of their business... AAPL has moved up and set new highs but RIMM price remains very depressed..

RIMM use to have a great value proposition to business users.... but all that is now obliterated by competition....it has lost its competitive edge...it's has remained a email device + a phone function... whereas others have all the other functions + email....

Think Blackberries will be a thing of the past very soon. even now i uses iphone (and i am the most untechie guy around). RIMM prob trying to do the inevitable through M&A - wont be surprised if they even try to acquire Palm - another company killed by RIMM.

another dynasty has fallen. Apple is rising.

Since they acquire QNX, it is unlikely they will acquire Palm.

It is also possible that they are trying to move away from the Java platform which Oracle now owns (after acquiring SUN).

Bad earning for RIMM.

Gap down, break low... (and 'To infinity and beyond')

Research In Motion Ltd., the BlackBerry maker, dropped 8.1 percent after reporting first-quarter revenue 2.5 percent below the average analyst forecast. Barrick Gold Corp., the world’s largest gold producer, advanced 2.6 percent. Bank of Nova Scotia, Canada’s third-largest bank, lost 0.6 percent.

RIMM is lucky to survive until today... they have no winning strategy... their edge was lost ever since device agnostic applications could provide email communication....

and their equipment do not aesthetically appeal....

After its earnings, RIMM gap down and yesterday, it continue its downward move.

From the chart, RIMM reminds me of Nokia (NOK)

Image

When Nokia miss its earnings, it gap down from $14 to $12 and steadily goes down to $8.

Having said that, if you look at the article from BusinessInsider on RIMM roadmap, do you see anything that excites you?

Personally, I do not find anything exciting for RIMM for the year ahead.

The only information that I am waiting is on their plans for the acquisition of QNX.
