South Korea's Ballot Scandal Is Reshaping Its Alliances. Washington and Tokyo Are Paying Attention.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's party won 12 of 16 local seats on June 3 — then within hours, reports of ballot shortages at 91 polling stations went viral.

His approval rating has dropped 20 points in two weeks, PPP support has overtaken his for the first time since he took office and conservative protesters are waving U.S. flags outside the Olympic Handball Stadium while former officials appear on Steve Bannon's podcast asking Trump to investigate.

Why Lee's heavy-handed response to protests could unify a fractious opposition

How the scandal is straining U.S.-South Korea security cooperation

Why Lee is pivoting to anti-Japan rhetoric and what it means for wartime logistics pacts and critical mineral supply chains

How this domestic crisis could accelerate South Korea's economic opening to China

The stakes are enormous: Lee holds a legislative majority and his term runs through 2030, so his grip on power is secure for now. But South Korea has a rich protest culture, a mobilized opposition and a direct line to Trump's network. Lee's efforts to criminalize dissent are making him look like exactly what his enemies say he is.

Korea’s world-beating stocks are now trading cheaper than ever

“Earnings are robust and still forecast to be strong.”

“I’m worried this quarter a lot of hyperscalers will still spend big but start talking about how they are optimising costs, and that’s bad news for memory because it means high prices are killing demand.”

Potential risk factors include the mounting competitive threat from Chinese firms such as ChangXin Memory Technologies, and the volatility of chip stocks that’s making the trade increasingly precarious.

Samsung and SK Hynix are “not screaming cheap anymore” based on PEG ratios, which measure price-to-earnings against earnings growth. “Share prices might hold steady for another six months, but they are unlikely to climb much higher”.
