Four possible scenarios:
1. China brokers a lasting peace;
2. Iran descends into chaos;
3. US walks away entirely and
4. Some muddled version of the status quo continues
The main threat to the Strait of Hormuz comes from low-cost, easily operated drones. If Iran fractures into warring factions, does that reduce or increase the threat to the Strait? If some version of the drone threat remains, will oil tankers (and their crews and insurers) be willing to transit the Strait?
The most likely near-term scenario: an uneasy ceasefire that breaks down periodically. When the US is less confrontational, ships can move through the Strait. But if the US lashes out, Iran can choke off traffic in a proportionate manner.
Two commercial vessels were struck by Iranian missiles, suffering significant damage but causing no casualties.
The reported attacks came after a one-week agreement between Washington and Tehran to suspend attacks in the strategic waterway expired, placing a memorandum of understanding signed less than three weeks ago at risk of unraveling.
A round of indirect talks between the United States and Iran in Doha last week ended without significant progress on security in the Strait of Hormuz.
