Starbucks sales grow at slowest pace in a year

Same-store sales at company-operated locations open for more than a year rose 5 per cent in the company’s fiscal first quarter, which ended Dec 31. That’s lower than the 6.4 per cent analysts expected.

Same-store sales in North America that were largely in line with expectations, in part to positive store traffic. North America operating margin, a measure of profitability, also beat estimates.

Fears of lowered demand, in part due to boycotts in the Middle East over the company’s perceived support of Israel – which Starbucks has repeatedly denied – also damped sentiment.

Earnings, excluding some items, were 90 US cents a share, while analysts expected 93 US cents.

Net revenue of US$9.4 billion fell short of the US$9.6 billion average forecast.

Starbucks reported lower profits on falling sales on Tuesday (Apr 30) as the coffee giant pointed to weakening consumer sentiment and lack-lustre conditions in China as factors behind an earnings miss.

The performance did not meet expectations as Starbucks continues to feel the impact of a more cautious consumer, particularly with more occasional customer and a deteriorating economic outlook has weighed on customer traffic and impact sales broadly across the industry.

Profits were US$772.4 million in the quarter ending Mar 31, down 15 per cent from the year-ago period, while revenues fell 2 per cent to US$8.6 billion.

Comparable stories in North America fell 3 per cent, while sinking by 11 per cent in China.

Can Starbucks (SBUX) Rebound From Earnings Miss?

For the second quarter that ended March 31, 2024, SBUX’s net revenues decreased 1.8% year-over-year to $8.56 billion.

Global same-store sales decreased by 4% as traffic to its cafes declined 6% in the quarter.

U.S., same-store sales dropped by 3% as traffic fell 7%.

In China, the company's second-largest market, same-store sales fell by 11%, primarily due to an 8% reduction in average ticket.

Net earnings attributable to SBUX declined 15% year-over-year to $772.40 million. It reported net earnings per share was $0.68

Cash and cash equivalents stood at $2.76 billion.
