Yellen says she was 'wrong' about inflation path, Biden supports Fed actions

WASHINGTON: U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen (pic) said on Tuesday that she was wrong in the past about the path inflation would take, but said taming price hikes is President Joe Biden's top priority and he supports the Federal Reserve's actions to achieve that.

Asked in a CNN interview whether she was wrong to downplay the threat that inflation posed in public statements over the past year, Yellen said: "I think I was wrong then about the path that inflation would take."

"As I mentioned, there have been unanticipated and large shocks to the economy that have boosted energy and food prices and supply bottlenecks that have affected our economy badly that I didn't at the time fully understand," Yellen added.

Powell Says Soft Landing ‘Very Challenging;’ Recession Possible

Recession is possible and calling a soft landing “very challenging.”

“The other risk, though, is that we would not manage to restore price stability and that we would allow this high inflation to get entrenched in the economy,” Powell told lawmakers on Wednesday. “We can’t fail on that task. We have to get back to 2% inflation.”

Officials “anticipate that ongoing rate increases will be appropriate,” to cool the hottest price pressures in 40 years.

Another 75 basis-point increase, or a 50 basis-point move, was on the table next month.

Former New York Fed President Bill Dudley: A recession is “inevitable” within the next 12 to 18 months.

Investors expect the US central bank to keep raising rates to a peak around 3.6% by the middle of next year.

Jerome Powell: Fed to Tame Inflation Unconditionally, Shrink Balance Sheet to US$2.5-3T

Jerome Powell, chairman of the Federal Reserve, said that the central bank's commitment to inflation fight is unconditional, adding that it really has to resume price stability, because without that, the country will be unable to have a sustained period of maximum employment where the benefits can spread very widely, foreign media reported.

Even if the U.S. unemployment is rising and inflation remains high, the Fed will not resort to interest rate cut, Powell said, who swore to get inflation down to 2%.

Powell furthered that the Fed aims to shrink the balance sheet to the range of around US$2.5-3 trillion, from the current size of around US$9 trillion.
