Venezuela

Caracas possesses 5,000 Russian-made MANPADS surface-to-air weapons, according to a military document reviewed by Reuters.

It’s the largest known stockpile in Latin America and a source of concern for U.S. officials amid the country's mounting turmoil.

U.S. lawmakers to fight massive Trump Saudi arms deal

WASHINGTON, May 25 (Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers introduced legislation on Thursday seeking to stop at least a portion of President Donald Trump's sale of weapons to Saudi Arabia.Source:

The Arms Export Control Act of 1976 allows a senator to force a vote on an arms sale, once Congress is formally notified of plans to go ahead. The same three senators introduced a similar resolution last year seeking to block the sale of $1.15 billion of tanks and other equipment to Saudi Arabia. That measure was defeated overwhelmingly.

Saudi Arabia agreed to by $110 billion of U.S. arms, with options running as high as $350 billion over 10 years.

The lawmakers aim to block about $500 million of the sale, the portion including precision-guided munitions and other offensive weapons.

Audit: U.S. Army lost track of over $1 billion in arms in Iraq last year

IRBIL, Iraq — The U.S. Army failed to properly keep tracks of hundreds of humvees, tens of thousands of rifles and other pieces of military equipment that were sent to Iraq, according to a government audit from 2016 that was obtained by Amnesty International and released Wednesday.

The price of the equipment — meant to equip the Iraqi army, Shiite militias and the Kurdish peshmerga — totaled more than $1 billion.

The $110 billion arms deal to Saudi Arabia is fake news

by Bruce Riedel Mond

It’s unlikely that the Saudis could pay for a $110 billion deal any longer, due to low oil prices and the two-plus years old war in Yemen.

An astonishing fact about the U.S. military

by Justin Brill

As a percentage of the economy, our spending is at its lowest point in more than 70 years.

U.S. military spending will rise significantly in the coming years.

Senator John McCain has proposed a spending increase of $50 billion per year, taking on 8,000 new troops, 59 new navy ships, and 93 more F-35 fighter jets.

We think that’s the low estimate. Even a shift to average levels of 4.5% to 5% of GDP spending would be an increase of $90 billion to $200 billion per year.

Boeing and other big defense companies face special challenge in new revenue rules

Defense company contracts are typically multibillion-dollar projects that are complex and have a long life

Will start recognizing revenue under the new standard as costs are incurred. That will substantially accelerate revenues compared to the current method, which waits until deliveries are made or performance milestones are achieved.
