The Two Cheapest Days to Travel

Planning your next trip? According to the travel site Kayak, the cheapest days to fly are Tuesday if your flight is domestic, and Thursday if your flight is international.

Some other things to consider before booking your next flight, according to Kayak are:

- Flying on Saturdays or Sundays can be 15 per cent more expensive

- January is, on average, the cheapest month to fly with fares that can be almost 20 per cent less expensive

- If travelling in the summer, June and July usually have better deals available than in August

- For European travel, look to book a flight between eight to 10 weeks in advance for best pricing.

- For travel to Asia, booking nine to 10 months out offers the best chance of a good deal

Make a quick getaway from baggage claim

Have you notice that no matter how unique your luggage seems to you, there is inevitably another piece just like it on your flight?

So you don't have to look through every black suitcase that rolls by on the conveyer belt, try to personalize your pieces of luggage a bit.

Perhaps you can tie bright-colored yarn or ribbon to the handle, or sew a unique patch in a visible area.

Make it easier on yourself: you don't really want to take forever looking for your bags after a long flight, right?

Another even more important reason to do all this is to avoid others from taking your luggage by mistake causing a much greater problem.

Execs in Asian luxury hotels fall prey to cyber espionage: study By Eric Auchard

(Reuters) - Security researchers have uncovered a sophisticated industrial espionage campaign, that targets business executives in luxury hotels across Asia once they sign on to computers using in-room wireless connections they consider private and secure.

The attacks, which go well beyond typical cybercriminal operations, have claimed thousands of victims dating back to 2009 and continue to do so, Kaspersky Lab, the world's largest private security firm, shows in a report published on Monday.

Executives from the auto, outsourced manufacturing, cosmetic and chemical industries have been hit, the security firm said. Others targeted include military services and contractors.

In 2012, the FBI issued a general warning to U.S. government officials, businessmen and academics, advising them to use caution when updating computer software via hotel Internet connections when traveling abroad.

Kaspersky's report goes further in detailing the scale, methods and precise targeting of these attacks on top business travelers.

The movements of executives appear to be tracked as they travel, allowing attackers to pounce once a victim logs on to a hotel Wi-Fi network. Hackers cover their tracks by deleting these tools off hotel networks afterward.

"These attackers are going after a very specific set of individuals who should be very aware of the value of their information and be taking strong measures to protect it," said Kurt Baumgartner, principal security researcher for Kaspersky, the world's largest privately held cybersecurity firm.

Unsuspecting executives who submit their room number and surname while logging on to their hotel room's wireless network are tricked into downloading an update to legitimate software such as Adobe Flash, Google Toolbar or Microsoft Messenger, Kaspersky said. Because attacks happen at sign-on, encrypted communications set up later offer no defense against attack.

The same elite spying crew has used advanced keystroke-logging software and encryption-breaking at multiple hotel chains across Asia, it said.

Kaspersky declined to name the executives involved or the luxury destinations targeted but said it had informed the hotels as well as law enforcement officials in affected locations.

Ninety percent of the victims came from five countries -- Japan, Taiwan, China, Russia and South Korea. Business travelers to Asia from Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland and the United States have also been duped, Baumgartner said.

The Kaspersky report said a key mystery remains how attackers appear to know the precise travel itinerary of each victim, which points to a larger compromise of hotel business networks that researchers say they are continuing to probe.

Norovirus

If you're planning a winter vacation right now, it might be a good idea to think twice about that cruise. Maybe even more than twice.

Because if you listen to what a doctor -- one who specializes in infectious diseases -- has to say, you'll drop that cruise brochure and never pick one up again.

What he said was that the thought of getting on a cruise ship scares him more than TB, anthrax, the flu and Ebola!

It all has to do with something called Norovirus, a 24 hour stomach flu that "makes you so sick, you will wish you were dead."

In fact, Dr. Kent Sepkowitz is such an anti-cruising crusader, that he says the vacation ships should be banned!

Dr. Sepkowitz does say that Norovirus is seldom a killer, but it's such an unpleasant illness, causing a good 24 hours of vomiting and diarrhea that it's not worth taking the chance.

Norovirus, also dubbed the "winter vomiting disease," can also easily infect people in nursing homes, hospitals and daycare, so it's not like you're totally "safe" on dry land, either.

But Dr. Sepkowitz does feel that cruise ships and Norovirus have a "close association." And he tells how cases seem to peak in certain years. Like 21 cruise outbreaks that occurred in 2007, one that included the super-fancy QE-II.

And an outbreak was recently reported on a ship called the "Crown Princess" that hit 158 people.

But if you're a fan of cruising, there are some things you can do to protect yourself. Things like being sure to wash your hands a lot more often and ordering off the menu instead of doing the buffet if you can.

Because there's nothing worse than spending your entire vacation in the bathroom!

Planning a flight? Use this simple new way to get the best price available. by Dr. David Eifrig

If you’re planning an air flight… try saving a few dollars by using the new app, FareScout.

You can use the app (published by the site FlyinAway.com) to help determine the best time to book a flight based on whether fares could increase or decrease from the date you want to book.

You may remember, I told readers the best travel deals are usually 54 days before a trip. Typically, the lowest fares are in the one- to three-and-a-half-month range. The most expensive time to book, on average, is two days before a trip.

But now, finding out the best time to book is easier, and maybe even more accurate. FareScout looks at the previous 13 months of fare data to determine whether a ticket’s price will fall or rise within the next seven days. But you can only use this for domestic flights departing within 60 days… although the company plans to expand this in the future.

FareScout is simple to use, it’s an app you download onto your iPhone. Just enter in your flight information and FareScout will tell you whether you should buy now or wait. The app will even let you know how much fares could increase or decrease. So if you want to save some money, without trying to figure out the best day to buy tickets on your own, try FareScout at www.flyinaway.com.
