Hmm... this thread is now 15 pages...

Singapore hit by spate of flash floods yet again as Dr Vivian goes ‘missing’

Singapore was hit by a spate of flash floods again in several parts of the island after a heavy downpour in the afternoon.

According to eye-witnesses, flash floods were reported in the city, Thomson, Bukit Timah, and Ang Mo Kio:

A Nanyang Polytechnic student took a video clip of the flooding in school and uploaded it to TR Facebook.

Another netizen Yap Keng Ho uploaded a video clip of the flooding in the city on Youtube:

As usual, the new PAP Environment Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan was nowhere to be seen, heard or found, following the ‘tradition’ started by his predecessor Yaacob Ibrahim who was always ‘missing in action’ whenever a flood occurred.

The flash floods today occurred barely less than a month after the last spate of flooding and was not reported by the state media.

why do we still have so many flooded areas every time there's some extended downpour?

how many of such human tragedy must we have before the relevant authorities take some positive steps to prevent such mishaps from happening?

I'm surprised that Sennett Estate is flooded. That's a hilly place ...

Heavy downpour causes floods in central Singapore

LATEST: PUB reports two lanes along Bukit Timah Road impassable to traffic. The Kranji Expressway at the slip road towards Woodlands is impassable to traffic. Drivers are advised to avoid these roads.

NETIZENS across Singapore reported flooding in various parts of Singapore due to the heavy downpour on Sunday morning.

Affected areas included the Sennett Estate near Potong Pasir, MacPherson, Toa Payoh, and the Balestier area.

Pearlene Han, a resident of Sennett Estate, said the heavy rains had made it 'impossible to leave the house'.

Fellow netizen Michael Ng said flooding had affected Mandalay Road, in the Balestier area, as well: 'The road looks like a river. Some of the cars at Mandalay Heights condo are stuck at their entrance.'

The floods had caused vehicles to be stuck on MacPherson Lane earlier on Sunday morning, said kom on citizen journalism website STOMP.

'At 8.45am, I was on my way out. I was shocked by the flood at MacPherson Lane. Many cars were stopped in the middle of the road. I'm very disappointed by the drainage system at MacPherson and hope that the authorities would do something about it.'

in the past, all rain water flows out to the big ocean.....resistance only appears when rain coincide with high tide....
...unless we have a new IDNS (Intelligent Drainage Network System)...or else we would not know how much and how fast we should pump it out?? blame it on nature for heavy rain?? :D

Photos: Retail malls in Orchard hit by massive flooding

Barely a year after a spate of flooding crippled businesses in Singapore’s prime shopping district of Orchard, it was hit by another spate of heavy flooding this morning which caused retail malls to be emptied and traffic brought to a standstill.

According to accounts from eye-witnesses, Tanglin Mall was especially hard-hit as its basement and ground levels were flooded from 9am onwards which saw the usually crowded mall becoming deserted:

Another netizen was having his breakfast at a food court at Orchard Towers when the flood waters seeped in suddenly without warning:

“I don’t even know it’s raining outside, the water just came in without warning. Siao liao, my new shoes and bag are now spoilt by the muddy water,” he quipped.

Orchard, Scott, Paterson and Tanglin roads were also submerged in flood water as traffic was brought to a standstill for more than an hour as the usually crowded shopping district is turned into a ‘ghost town’:

It is not known how much losses the businesses will incur this time. When Orchard was flooded last year, PUB blamed it on clogged debris in the drains with PAP ministers taking turns to lecture Singaporeans for littering in public.

PAP de facto leader Lee Kuan Yew even chided Singaporeans for expecting everything to be ‘perfect’ and said:

“No amount of engineering can prevent flooding.”

Such rampant flooding is almost unheard of before 2009 with some Singaporeans speculating if the Marina Barrage might be a possible cause.
