I thought that the gaming industry is a very good investment ( cash business ), until I learned about bad debts from jumet operators. Now, I've also learnt about litigation risks. Do you know what you are buying ?

Australian high-roller sues casino

MELBOURNE (AFP) - - A compulsive Australian gambler banned from Sydney's casino blew more than two million dollars (1.5 million US) on the card tables in a neighbouring state in just 43 minutes, a court heard.

High-flying property developer Harry Kakavas is suing Melbourne city's Crown Casino in the Supreme Court of Victoria for facilitating his pathological betting, despite knowing he had a problem.

Kakavas, 42, was banned by Sydney police from attending the local Star City Casino and he claims the exclusion order should have been enforced Australia-wide, national newswire AAP reported.

Instead, his lawyers said rival casino Crown knowingly offered to fly Kakavas to Melbourne on at least 14 occasions and left him gift boxes of 50,000 dollars in "lucky money" on the private jet to help him gamble.

During a period of 16 months in 2005 and 2006 Kakavas allegedly turned over 1.5 billion dollars, and was allowed to bet single hands of 300,000 dollars, AAP reported.

He lost a total of 30 million dollars, and is suing Crown and its executives for about 20.5 million, AAP said.

Crown's lawyer Neil Young said Kakavas was eventually banned from gambling at the casino in August 2006 after losing two million in 43 minutes at the baccarat table.

But he rejected claims that Crown had attempted to take advantage of Kakavas.

"There was no effort in any sense of the word to lure Mr Kakavas to Crown," Young said.

If Crown is found to have breached the Casino Control Act by allowing Kakavas to gamble it could also be liable to pay 700 million dollars in illegally-paid winnings to the Victorian state government.

The case continues.

High-roller has bad feng shui in US casino: report

TAIPEI : A Taiwanese man who lost two million US dollars in Las Vegas is threatening to sue the casino for using feng shui to cause his losing streak, a report here said.

The man, surnamed Yuan, alleged that the Venetian dug a one-metre (40-inch) square hole on the wall of the presidential suite he was staying in April last year and covered it with a black cloth, said Apple Daily.

The casino also put two white towels in front of Yuan's suite and turned on two large fans facing his room without notifying him, it said.

Yuan claimed that his luck turned bad after discovering the arrangements and that he went from winning 400,000 dollars to losing two million, the report said.

"We Chinese drape black and white cloths only when there is a death in the family. It is such a taboo for regular people, let alone for the gamblers," he was quoted as saying.

Yuan filed a complaint against the Venetian after returning to Taiwan and demanded the cancellation of a two-million-dollar debt to the casino, half of it on credit, it said.

The casino has promised to refund him 100,000 dollars in cash and the same amount in chips, the paper said, without explaining why it had agreed to this.

Yuan had notified the Venetian through his lawyer of his intention to sue for feng shui sabotage if the casino fails to come up with a "reasonable solution," it said.

Feng shui, or wind and water, is an ancient Chinese belief that seeks to channel good and bad psychic energy through the arrangement of furniture and ornaments.

There are some common feng shui taboos among Taiwanese gamblers, such as bringing a hair brush to a gambling table as "brush" is a homophone of "lose," the report said.

Hong Kongers gamble $155 mn in one day

Hong Kong, July 2 (DPA) Hong Kong gamblers sent out a positive note about the state of the city’s economy by staking more than $155 million on the last racing day of the season, officials said Thursday.

More than 63,000 people placed the bets Wednesday’s races at the city’s Sha Tin race course, recording the second highest amount staked in a single day for the past year, according to the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

The club is waiting for a government decision on whether it can stage five extra race days next year to try to bring in more revenue after seeing takings slip over the past year because of the global economic downturn.

Despite the success of Wednesday’s race day, total betting turnover for the 78 race meetings held this season was down slightly by around $110 million to $8.6 billion,

Race organisers also want tax on betting reduced to combat internet gambling and to try to lure hard-up racing fans back to the courses.

Despite its image as a gambling-mad city, bets on horse racing are the only form of legal gambling in Hong Kong apart from limited soccer betting and a weekly, government-run lottery.

Gambler sues casino for lost $23 mln fortune: report

SEOUL (AFP) - - A former South Korean company boss who says he gambled away 30 billion won (23.5 million dollars) in three years is suing a casino for allegedly fuelling his addiction, according to a report.

The man identified only as Chung, 67, is appealing a court ruling last November which ordered the Kangwon Land casino to pay him 2.8 billion won in damages.

Chung says this is not enough since between 2003 and 2006 he lost 30 billion won at the casino -- the country's only one authorised to admit Koreans under strict gaming laws.

The former head of a leather products company claims the government-run casino turned a blind eye to him making bets above the legitimate limit.

Chung says he knew nothing about gambling until he first visited the casino six years ago and believed he could recoup his losses by placing more bets.

"Then I got addicted," the JoongAng Daily quoted him as saying.

Chung, chafing at the 10 million won per-bet limit, hired up to five people as subordinate betters so he could wager up to 60 million won at a time.

"I still get the feeling that I can win back the money at the casino," he was quoted as saying, adding he is currently undergoing weekly therapy for his gambling addiction.

Lawyers for Kangwon Land say Chung lost his fortune in a "voluntary and normal way."

For the past few days, I had to walk thru a casino, to get from one side of the hotel to the other side.

Do you believe that I did not bet at all, on my fav game of Roulette, this past few days ? In the past, I would always try my luck on those tables that I believed is biased ie. too many reds or too many blacks or too many 1st 18th or 2nd 18th or too many Odds or Evens ..

Is that a sign of old age ? :?

Or is it because I'm always gambling already everyday on the SGX and the HKEX, so roulette does not offer me any kicks anymore ? :?
