Durian - King of Fruits 01 (May 08 - May 09)

This one can be found along the Forest Walk before the Alexandra Arch (maybe a couple of hundred metres away)... If you're walking from the Harbourfront side, it'll be on your left. Very tall tree that's quite a standout.

Oh, btw, on my second trip, spotted a family of monkeys along the Forest Walk as well. :D

Weekends - Chit Chat Thread

Kennynah:
herry, great idea. Any jb durian plantation details? Many thanks

Kenny, sorry for the late reply. Great news comes lately.

I have eaten the durian from this place just before I put up the post. I could not get the address or the phone number. However, I was given the direction of how to get there.

Here it goes:

1. Drive to Johore through the 2nd link.
2. Turn into the Pontian Road.
3. Drive till you reach the town, Pekan Nenas (pineapple). There is a big pineapple to welcome you.
4. At the traffic light, turn right.
5. Drive along this road.
6. At the first coffee shop, there is a duck rice stall. There is a man, Mr Tan, who has 2 baskets of durians on his bike. They are good.
7. If you want to search for better or worse gems, drive further.
8. Stretching 4 ot 8 km, you will find small pondoks (stalls) along the way. The Malays are selling durians there.
9. By the side of this stretch of the road, there are small durian holdings too, owned by Malay families, each may have between 10 and 100 durian trees.
10. Risks:
10.1. Don't buy durians loaded on lorries. These durians are not from the local holdings.
10.2. There are 2 big plantations there owned by not Malay people. They are more expensive.

The organic, sangat sedap durian I ate came from one of these small holdings along this stretch of the road. This holding has about 70 trees, owned by a Malay family.

Happy durian sedap hunting!

Look what reading this thread does to me :)

------------------------------------------------
This weekend had been a fun one for me :)

For the first time in my life, I ate durians! I even sent a mass email to my best buddies, asking them if they wanted to see me eat durians for the first time. My maiden voyage, so to speak. Well, don't ask me why I didn't eat durians before. I seriously don't mind the smell (it's quite nice-smelling) but I just didn't eat it before today.

Perhaps I've been passing by some durian stalls on my way to work. Perhaps it's the durian seasons. Perhaps I've seen those pictures of these spiky crowns of the king of fruits posted on huatopedia that got me interested in trying.

I've also tried eating mangosteens for the first time in my life! Swa-ku hor? I find durians manageable. I don't like it and don't mind eat it. But after eating a total of 5 seeds for the past 2 days, I think I've got enough durian poisoning in me to last me 1 full year! Someone suggested to me durian puffs, which is nicer and not so strong compared to durians. Perhaps next time?

Image

Mangosteens, on the other hand, taste much nicer. A little like oranges, with a sour-ry after taste. I love it! My gf even taught me how to 'open' a mangosteen :) Eating the king of fruits and the queen of fruits together makes the king a little easier to manage :)

This year marks many firsts for me:

1. First time I tracked my personal income and expenses in detail

2. First time I switched my diet to mainly vegetarian

3. First time I'm the only one requesting for vegetarian course for wedding dinner. My portions will be served separately - it's really cool, everyone should try it once!

4. First time I ate durians

5. First time I ate mangosteens

6. First time I read so many books!!

When is the last time you did something for the first time?

Super la Pap!!

erm, how to open a mangosteen? share leh ...

durian is a top-down investment, whereas mangosteen is from bottom-up investment?

(it is an art to open these 2 fruits ... yeah?)

Haha, san, what a way to describe the 'opening' of the fruits :) Indeed, to open a mangosteen, I was taught to look for the 'star' at the bottom of the fruit and press it. The 'star' is the place where the stigma, stamens of the flowers grew before the fruit develops. Once the 'star' sinks into the fruit, there will be an opening where we can break the mangosteen into two halves. White succulent 'oranges' will hid inside the purple throne of the queen, waiting for you to try them.

Hi Sanny,
I read your post differently. I interpret it to mean when playing with blue chips, one should do the top-down version whereas the opposite apply for penny stock. ;)
