On 7 July 2009, I watched Larry King Live and noted what actress Pati Austin said abt MJ's eagerness to learn and learn :
KING: Tell me about him.
AUSTIN: Good heavens, the first time I worked with Michael was on "The Wiz." He was incredibly shy. He was walking around with a little notebook, and if anybody said anything clever or that he didn't quite understand, it went in the notebook. And the research began. And that was my first -- any kind of meeting I had with Michael was about that.
KING: And that perfection remained throughout?
AUSTIN: All the way through, all the way through. And then, we never spoke during all of this. He have would kind of look at me from across the studio. He was kind of, hmm. If I'd say something funny, he'd write it down. If anybody would say something clever, he'd write it down.
When the Jackson 5 started touring state-to-state, MJ left formal schooling behind and had a Jewish tutor, Mrs Rose Fine, who travelled with the group. That explained for his good diction and grammatically good English. But the long hours of rehearsing and performing cut him off from many things one needs to know abt the world.
Many have forgotten or had no idea abt the social conditions in the American music industry right up to the early 1980's. Then, black stations play no white music. White radio rations play black artistes' works but only if they are jazz or R&B stations. Records in stores were categorized. No black men play rock or heavy metal.
MTV was a white station which routinely rejected black music until Billie Jean came along. And they started to beg MJ for more. In a great way, MJ tore through the barriers.
He talked to his son abt perseverance and hardwork, essential elements of success.
