‘Always double-check the URL, don’t be like me’: Victim of WhatsApp Web impersonation scam

By JOYCE ZK LIM

He clicked on the first search result for “WhatsApp Web” on a Google search, not realising that this was not the official site.

He scanned the QR code there, which allowed scammers to log into his account from their own device.

Pretending to be Fidie, they contacted 10 of his colleagues, including his boss, asking that they urgently lend “him” thousands of dollars for a family emergency.

100 fake tour agency pages lay cheap-package traps

Travel agency EGL Tours says it has received over 20,000 inquiries after at least 100 fake Facebook fan pages have allegedly scammed Hongkongers using cheap hotel, buffet and plane ticket packages as bait.

EGL Tours said the fake pages, which use its name and logo, offer unreasonably cheap packages, prompting thousands of customers to make inquiries.

The fake pages are almost identical to EGL's genuine page, except that the agency's Chinese name is missing.

Scammers would advertise on Facebook, selling Cathay Pacific round-trip business-class flights from Hong Kong for as low as HK$2,990. They also use headlines such as "Incredible prices! Cathay Pacific has a buy one, get one free promotion!" to attract customers.

Married couple loses over RM1.6mil to investment scam

Contacted by three individuals on three different numbers after expressing interest in an investment scheme on Facebook.

"She was then added to three different investment-related Whatsapp groups, and was briefed about share investment seminars, tips on shares with potentials and notes about share investments.

"After being in the groups for two weeks, the woman and her husband, who is in his 40s, were ordered to leave the groups to undergo investment training in a new Whatsapp group in October”.

Then ordered to download several apps on Google Play store and to make fund transfers to 19 company accounts for share investments of over RM1.6mil in stages.

The couple had received returns of RM277,148 during that period before realising they had been scammed when they received a suspicious initial public offering (IPO) certificate from China that contained spelling errors.
