i hear now, besides the XO, the best of the best D24 is called "hong xia" or red prawns...havent tried that yet...

while, my fav is durian fruit, i just dont fancy as much the derivatives (staying true to an investment forum here) such as durian cakes, puffs(are ok but still pale in comparison to the real thing), moose, drink, etc...

eating durians, is like, drinking a very good wine....let the aroma twirl around the palate and very slowly swallow....while inhaling...and just as the fruit is sliding down the throat, exhale thru the nostrils slowly.... one can almost taste a tinge of alcohol....and that's only if you makan a solidly good D24...

Now,

as in all forum postings here.....we get to the

How to Do it Right....choosing a durian....hahahaha

(this one, i cut-n-paste from some website....but i remember vividly, that's how my dad used to select the fruits...)

Listen to the Durian

Assuming that the durian is not frozen, the first thing that you should do is pick the durian up in both your palms. Do this gently, and if the thorns hurt, use a couple of tea towels to protect your hands. Place the durian next to your ear, and give it a gentle shake, not unlike shaking a maracas to some soul music. If there is no sound, it means that the fruit is too ripe. If there is a hard knocking sound, the fruit is not ripe enough. What you want to hear are dull, subtle knocks.

Smell the Fragrance of the Durian
After identifying the right knocking sounds, you want to narrow your choice down further with the right smell. Put the durian about an inch from your nose. Take a whiff. Can you smell the slightly fragrant odor? If it smells raw, like an unripe fruit, then the durian is probably not ripe. If the smell is strong and over-powering, it is probably too ripe and the flesh is likely to be soft and gooey. It should smell just so – neither too raw nor too strong.

ok, this one below, is my own addition

Feeling the Weight of the Durian
Not only because you dont wana have to pay so much for a fruit (if it is by the kilo), you dont wana to unnecessarily pay for the husks; which is only useful for getting rid of the durian smell off your fingers and mouth...
supposing you have 2 fruits of approximately the same size, always choose the lighter one. the reason being that the lighter fruit, will likely mean that the husk wall is thinner, hence meatier insides.
this is totally opposite to choosing jackfruits, where you want weight...but not durians.

bong ah peh tea !!!!

K : Ur Lee24 durian ..... got to be the world's mosy pricy durian .... haha

Anyway, last week, I was at the 4 season's durian place @ Joo Chiat. My fren who eats durian frequently was tasked to select the durian .. Mao Shan Wang .... heard its really gd .. 1 kg $15. This durian's hefty weight of 3kg++ cost us $48.

Half the fruit was pretty satisfying, the other half was very mushy ... tooo ripe .. sigh! The guy guaranteed us it was going to be the most satisfying durian we ever bought! Gee .... i beg to defer as i felt quite cheated w his recommendation.

So before we left, i approached another guy whom i witnessed serving another customer equipped with better durian knowledge. Bought the D24 durian and man was it a much better choice at a far cheaper price.

Sometimes cheaper durians can be juz as good .... so i doubt i would return to this place again n patronise the geylang area instead ..... sun's review on the balestier rd store .. Combat durian ..... Anyone's been there before?
