DR Yaacob won the Industrial and Systems Engineering Dept's award for excellence in teaching for academic year 1994/1995. Subsequently he was inducted into politics. His PhD is from Stanford University where he met his Puerto Rico-born wife........Ha, ha I'm quoting from a magazine left on my table

This time of the year is not the usual rainy season. Lighting struck the ferris wheel. And wonder what's next?

i'm toying with the idea of turning this torrential raining into some useful episode... like converting the collected rain water, thru cleansing system, for for drinking and washing.... likewise, i should wana eventually do some simple research into harnessing solar power for household consumption...and later apply to be a supplier of excess electricity to neighbours .. maybe I call it "Neighbour Power"

to be honest, this is not my concept...but an earlier borrowed idea from watching some documentaries

we are blessed to be located in the sunny tropics, where we can expect numerous rainy days to ROI such investments...

having spent my entire life mostly on this island, i still cant get use to the hot and humid weather....especially after returning from a cooler location abroad... once you step out of changi airport..the humidity really stinks me... buay tahan....

wouldn't it be nice to "dome" our island... giving it perpetual airconditioning and controlled humidity... maybe even introduce artificial 4 seasons...

imagine a force field surrounding our airspace... no cloaked klingon warship can missile us...

OHH mind....i really did not know this guy has got such high engineering credentials....unfortunately his explaination does not sync....or he couldn't be bother to explain in engineering details to other MPs.

Good engineers are people that understand the system so well that they can explain in easy lay man terms.
And there is no need to wait until 3 floods in 2 months to look into the system.....I am not a civil engineer and I doubt our drainage system is rocket science!

p/s: I am not saying Dr.Yacoob should take all responsibilty....but when you do not know....just say so...no need to give once in 50 years kind of crap....Singapore is not living a fishing village...full of fishermen........talents are not limited to CS.....so you got to watch your intell level when you talk....

Title : MM Lee says no amount of engineering can prevent flooding

SINGAPORE : Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has said no amount of engineering can prevent flooding.

Speaking to the media after touring the waterfront development at the Kallang and Kolam Ayer areas, Mr Lee emphasised there is a limited amount of space in Singapore that developers can take underground. There is also a limited amount of space for canals.

So if Singapore has extraordinary rainfall, the country has to prepare for it.

Mr Lee noted that Singapore and Singaporeans expect everything to be perfect, which he said the nation's leaders try to do.

But he added that there are some things which are beyond human control as they are acts of God - unless Singaporeans want to have half the country developed with roads, and the rest with canals.

Mr Lee was accompanied by the Environment and Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim and grassroots leaders.

Earlier in the evening, they visited the Kolam Ayer Active, Beautiful and Clean or ABC Waterfront and The River Vista at Kallang where he was given an update on the developments in the area.

The Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme is a long-term initiative which transforms Singapore's reservoirs and waterways into vibrant, aesthetically-pleasing rivers and lakes.

Opened to the public in April 2008, the Kolam Ayer ABC Waterfront is the pilot project for this programme.

The demonstration project featured a makeover of a 250-metre stretch of the Kallang River, bringing waterfront living to the doorstep of HDB heartlanders.
