Expect flash floods over the weekend: NEA By Kai Fong

Expect afternoon showers — sometimes heavy and with thunder — over the weekend (Yahoo!).

Keep your umbrellas ready, heavy rain and high tidesare expected over the weekend from Saturday to Monday.

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), afternoon showers with thunder coinciding with high tides of at least 3.3 metres could lead to localised flash floods. The low-lying areas at risk include Lorong Buangkok, Jalan Seaview, Meyer Road, Lorong 101-Lorong 106 Changi and Everitt Road North.

The public is advised to obtain the latest weather reports by tuning in to radio broadcasts or calling NEA’s weather forecast hotline at 6542-7788.

They can follow @NEAsg on Twitter, visit www.nea.gov.sg or access the mobile weather service, Weather@SG http://weather.nea.gov.sg.

The public can also call PUB’s 24-hour Call Centre at 1800-284 6600 to report obstructions in drains or to check the flood situation.

For information on managing flash floods and accessing information on the water level in key canals and drains, you may refer to http://www.pub.gov.sg/managingflashfloods.

Flash floods in Bishan, Ang Mo Kio, Yio Chu Kang By Jalelah Abu Baker

HEAVY rainfall since early afternoon on Wednesday caused caused localised flash floods in two areas including the junction of Ang Mo Kio Ave 3 and 8, and Bishan Street 13.

The flash floods subsided within 20 minutes. Among the affected areas were Yio Chu Kang too. A spokesman for the PUB said that this is the first time in recent years that these areas have been hit.

Rainwater filled up roads, void decks, and even a link from Yio Chu Kang MRT station to Nanyang Polytechnic. Student Zhua Zong Sheng, 20, said that he was about to use the link to leave his school when he noticed it. 'The water was up to my kneecap,' said the 1.75m-tall recent graduate. He added that the water entered the area through window-like fences.

About 90 mm of rain fell in less than one hour (between 3.00pm-4.00pm). The amount of rainfall was approximately more than 50% of the average monthly rainfall for May. The National Environment Agency (NEA) put up a warning on its website earlier. It said that heavy showers with thunder and gusty winds were expected over many areas of Singapore between 4.10pm and 5.15pm. PUB also said that flash floods could occur in low-lying areas in the event of heavy rain.

For more details, call NEA's weather forecast hotline at 6542-7788, or go to www.nea.gov.sg.
