Stats of the week: 59%

Gain in shares of Starbucks since July 1.

The coffee chain sits at a new 52-week high. The economy can't be doing that bad if folks are buying $5 coffee.

IT'S AN INCREDIBLE RALLY IN "SPENDING STOCKS" by Brian Hunt

Dillard's... Nordstrom... Home Depot... Best Buy... Disney. These are all stocks that "should" be struggling.

After all, unemployment is at a 26-year high. Manufacturing jobs continue to flee to Asia. It's not an environment that should support profits for the "spending stocks" of America. Thing is, these five stocks are now at new 52-week highs.

And let's remember one of our favorite "real world" indicators... the share price of Starbucks. Today's chart displays the extraordinary 2009 performance of the world's largest seller of $5 lattes. Starbucks is up 50% in just the past six months. What's going on here?

The market has a way of confounding nearly everyone, that's what. Especially when the government is providing the biggest credit "goosing" in history. We have to agree with the "bears" out there: Yes, the U.S. economy is facing major problems. The government is spending money like a man with two days to live.

But until stocks like Starbucks start to falter, we have to respect that the government has inflated prices and demand. Whether these six companies are enjoying "real" demand or not, the trend in spending stocks is up.

This chain is expanding aggressively to China and eyeing India and Vietnam. It now offers full cream, low fat, no fat, soya for its caramel macchiato. I anticipate a very strong recovery for this ticker.
(disclosure : I'm a vested customer, a long-term Starbucks addict).

i ws just thinking about kopi this afternoon, as i was drinking my 70cents kopi-o-siew-dai....

if i was to relocate to a european country....could be a plausible business to also offer our kopi-o(full flavour), kopi-o-kosong (no fat), kopi-o-siew dai(low fat), kopi-see(full cream)...but packaged as a premium condiment to pies and scones? hahahaha.... 8-)

Reminds me of this musical genius, Liu JiaChang, who has just sang his swansong in Taipeh. He's retiring to Los Angeles and simply drink coffee and look after his dear wife of 30 years, ChenChen. Wow, such a romantic husband.

On the call: Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz
July 21, 2010 8:19 PM ET
By The Associated Press

(AP) - Starbucks Corp. has said it hopes to expand in China so the country ultimately becomes its second-largest market outside the U.S.

During a conference call Wednesday with investors to discuss the coffee chain's third-quarter results, CEO Howard Schultz told investors the important performance measure of revenue at stores open at least a year climbed by double-digit percentage points in China. The figure includes some menu items available only in China.

QUESTION: What is the company's plan for China?

RESPONSE: We continue to seek opportunities to deliver locally relevant product offerings throughout our international markets and are seeing positive customer response for our localization efforts. ...

(P)roducts like black sesame green tea Frappuccino and black bean kiwi tart are product innovations tailored for the Chinese palate. We introduced these across all of our stores in mainland China (during the quarter). We have learned over the years that sensitivity and familiarity with Chinese culture is critical in how we think about and execute all aspects of our business in China.

Chinese consumers love Starbucks, and we see it every day in our stores.

Starbucks (SBUX) Price Target Raised to $32 at Piper Jaffray

July 22, 2010 9:37 AM EDT

Piper Jaffray maintains an 'Overweight' rating on Starbucks and raises the stock's price target from $30 to $32 amid strong Q3 results.

A Piper Jaffray analyst says, "Strong third-quarter margin results are particularly encouraging and we remain convinced that further opportunities for margin and multiple expansion remain. As the company accelerates operations internationally, continues its roll-out of Via, and maintains a steady dividend policy, we view the natural maturation of the CPG business as an additional and meaningful contributor to both top and bottom lines."

Despite the beat, shares of Starbucks have just opened about 1% lower. The stock last traded at $24.98. Piper Jaffray's new price target suggests potential upside of about 28% from where the stock is trading this morning.

Hehe, I am also a shareholder in SBUX, but I do not drink coffee. I like their cloudy apple juice though :)
