Steel Union, Chinese Companies Link up for Texas Wind Project
By Michael Kanellos, Greentechmedia.com
August 6, 2010

A-Power Energy Generation Systems (Nasdaq: APWR), the wind turbine manufacturer from China, is turning into a real America First outfit.

The company -- which is part of a Sino-U.S. consortium building a large wind farm in Texas and a turbine factory in Nevada -- announced an alliance today with the United Steel Workers that will ultimately lead to a U.S.-based supply chain for the company. Manufacturing, assembly, component sourcing -- the USW will work on all aspects of those projects with A-Power, Shenyang Power Group (the developer) and others.

A-Power and SPG anticipate purchasing over time approximately 50,000 tons of steel to be manufactured in unionized American steel mills to supply the towers for a 615MW wind farm in Texas.

Second Quarter 2010 Financial Highlights
-- Revenue increased 30.1% to $74.8 million from $57.5 million in the prior year period.
-- Gross profit increased 51.1% to $11.6 million from $7.7 million in the prior year period.
-- Gross margin was 15.5% compared to 13.4% in the prior year period.

Mr. Jinxiang Lu, A-Power's Chairman and CEO commented, "Our results in the second quarter were primarily driven by growth in our DG business, both domestically and internationally. This segment experienced larger project orders and also benefited from higher international sales in the second quarter which fueled our gross margin increase. We are pleased that our revenue contribution from international projects has exceeded 30% of total revenues for the first time this quarter. With significant wins in Vietnam, Pakistan and Thailand, we hope to continue building upon this international success. While our DG business generated EPC work for wind projects, we did not recognize revenue from wind turbine sales in the second quarter due to delays obtaining final permits for our 2.7 MW turbines scheduled for delivery to our Inner Mongolia and Shandong wind projects. We believe wind turbine sales will pick up in the second half of the year."

this got me pretty riled up the whole day. just because they did not delivered any wind turbines for Q2, the market really pummeled this ticker, despite the overall encouraging results and reaffirmation of their 2010 guidance. their growth is consistent (not exponential like RINO) which is good and steady for me.

i also dont know whats going on.

By Chip Brian

 Another hearing,

Jim Cramer said on CNBC's Mad Money Lightning Round OT that A-Power Energy Generation Systems, Ltd. (NASDAQ: APWR) had a poor quarter, and the stock should be sold. A-Power Energy Generation Systems, Ltd. (APWR) fell 12.20% today.

Cramer thinks that coal is going to make a break through, but it will be more expensive than natural gas, and therefore he is a seller of coal names like Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE: ACI). He likes Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE: BTU), because of its exposure to China. Arch Coal (ACI) fell 1.18% today, and Peabody Energy (BTU [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]) fell 1.56%.

It's been more than a year since I first wrote about Chinese alt-energy player A-Power Energy Generation Systems (Nasdaq: APWR). Here's what I said back then:

"I'm more than just a bit worried about the company's big promises on the turbine side, and want to see solid execution on that front before I promote this company from the ranks of wind wannabes."

Fast-forward a year and change, and A-Power hasn't done much to dispel my unease. The firm still isn't racking up much revenue on the wind-turbine side. Yes, there's a fittingly outsized Texas wind farm on the horizon, but A-Power isn't expecting a significant revenue contribution from that project, which is still seeking financing, until late 2011 at the earliest. A-Power recognized zero wind turbine revenue in the second quarter, and blamed permitting delays.

I would be very interested to know how many turbines the company has actually manufactured this year. This figure wasn't offered by management or requested by either of the two analysts on the conference call.

Looking forward, A-Power expects to deliver 30 to 50 units to the wind farm project by the end of the year, and to recognize revenue on the manufacture and sale of the turbines, but not on the installation and on-site construction. Assuming the company delivers 30 units, I would pencil in roughly $100 million in revenue and $25 million in gross profit for the Texas wind farm.

That leaves around $258 million in additional second-half sales until the company hits its top-line guidance of $500 million for the year. That's about what the company's core distributed generation business segment booked in all of 2009. If A-Power can't pull in a fair amount of wind revenue from its Chinese projects, I'm afraid the company might blow its guidance.

That said, A-Power is looking pretty cheap these days. The company is now valued at 0.8 times trailing sales, and those sales are almost certainly headed higher over the next few quarters. Even with Chinese small caps out of favor these days, companies like JinkoSolar (NYSE: JKS), Duoyuan Global Water (NYSE: DGW), and RINO International (Nasdaq: RINO) all trade for more than 1.5 times sales.

As long as A-Power's sales come in somewhere in the ballpark of management's guidance, investors may catch a break here. Over the long term, I'm less positive on A-Power's overall business, as noted here.

GH,

Are you averaging down?

Looks like APWR rebounced quite a fair bit in this week.

I am considering to buy in another lot at right time, and market conditions.

i do not wish to average down until the company management proves that it is worthwhile to do so. the texas wind farm is chugging along albeit slowly due to politics.

they recently signed a moe with steel workers union to purchase us steel for their spanking new factory and wind turbine facility in nevada. it must be a curious case for the chinese to navigate thru workers union as they do not have such thing in china. glad that went thru the right channels and things panned out for the better.

im just waiting for the whole deal to be on white n black. once that is signed i am a relieved investor!
