By ANGELA TAN
Thakral Corporation Ltd said its net profit for the first quarter of 2010 rose 153 per cent compared to a year ago to S$2.01 million.
This included a net gain of S$1.5 million from the disposal of a building in Chengdu, China, an increase in financial income and foreign exchange gains in Q1FY10.
Revenue was up 13 per cent at S$111.03 million due to improved sales at its consumer electronics distribution business, especially in Hong Kong.
Thakral Corporation is taking a bigger step into the real estate industry and plans to set up a joint venture (JV) for property investments.
The company is focusing on the residential sector in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. It will be taking direct stakes in projects, and will also seek participation from other co-investors.
Thakral is eyeing projects with an internal rate of return of 15-25 per cent, and an investment horizon of one to three years.
Thakral plans to form a JV for its property investments, and it will hold a 51 per cent stake in it. The JV should be up by Q1 next year.
