Why Emerging Market Run Can Continue

BNP in April recommended an overweight position in emerging market equities, and still holds that view.

Mange adds:
” … growth in emerging economies, in both real and nominal terms, has once again started outpacing that of developed countries after lagging it for about five years until Q3 2015.

Economists and public institutions are forecasting that emerging economies’ GDP will expand more rapidly than the output of developed markets both this year and next …

Admittedly, it is Brazil and Russia, which seem set to move out of deep recessions in 2017, that are likely to be the main contributors to EM’s growth acceleration …

If history is a good guide, the relative performance of emerging equity markets versus developed ones should be well supported by a sustained widening of the growth differential, all the more so as EM equities are still trading at big discounts to their developed-market peers in price and valuation terms … “

Are Emerging Markets Ready for the U.S. Election and Fed?

October 4 -- Most emerging market currencies fell as data showing expansion in the U.S. manufacturing sector fueled wagers that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates before year-end.

The won and Poland’s zloty paced declines, while Malaysia’s ringgit was the only one of 24 developing-nation currencies tracked by Bloomberg to advance, as an overnight rally in energy prices offset the prospect of a Fed rate increase as soon as next month.

Emerging market stocks advanced on speculation the benefit of stronger U.S. economic growth will be felt globally.

Is it too late to buy into the emerging market rally?

EM have outperformed developed nations so far in 2016. But it is not too late to join the rally.

The macro-economic and earnings outlook for EM is still improving.

With Europe under stress, major EM look even more attractive on a relative basis.

We are overweight EM equities versus Swiss equities, which are defensive and thus less well placed to benefit from global growth.

We are also overweight a basket of EM currencies versus select developed market currencies.

ROSENBERG: Emerging markets are about to surprise the world in a good way

“There are some interesting things happening right now overseas in Southeast Asia, even parts of Latin America, and in India,”

Rosenberg is impressed that the growth rate in China has stabilized at around 6-6.5%, but more significantly that the private sector numbers are validating the official statistics.

“Philippines is doing quite well. I’m noticing the numbers out of Korea, Taiwan, the export and production numbers have started to pick up in Asia.
