Meta’s Wang says coming AI model has caught up with OpenAI

by Ambar Warrick

Meta’s upcoming model, codenamed Watermelon, has caught up with OpenAI’s flagship GPT-5.5 model.

Meta has largely lagged AI offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic, despite spending billions of dollars on chips, data centers, and acquiring talent.

The company had released its Muse Spark model in April, which was seen performing well on benchmarks but still falling short of rival offerings.

Meta Platforms’ Cloud Push: Growth Opportunity Versus AI Concerns
Reported by Leo Miller. Article Published: 7/8/2026.

Meta Platforms stock rose 8.8% on July 1 following reports that the company may begin selling excess compute capacity to outside firms.

Comparisons to CoreWeave and a SpaceX-Alphabet leasing deal suggest Meta's potential cloud business could scale quickly and ease concerns over rising capital spending.

CFO Susan Li recently said Meta has consistently underestimated its compute needs, casting doubt on how much excess capacity actually exists for the cloud push.

<Research> CMSI: Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) Short-Term Profit Under Pressure, Maintains Overweight Rating

China Merchants Securities (HK) issued a report stating that Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) 2Q revenue rose 28% YoY to USD60.8 billion, about 1% above expectations and accelerating further from the 22% growth rate in 2025.

GAAP operating profit fell 8% YoY to USD18.8 billion, while operating margin declined to 31%.

Total expenses surged 55% YoY to USD42 billion.

For 3Q guidance, the company expects mid-point revenue of USD62.5 billion, up 22% YoY.

The mid-point of full-year total expense guidance was raised to USD167 billion, mainly reflecting litigation-related expenses recognized in 2Q.

The company still expects 2026 GAAP operating profit to exceed that of 2025.

The report said Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) operating cash flow in 2Q increased 25% YoY to USD31.9 billion, but capital expenditure surged 88% YoY to USD31.1 billion, resulting in free cash flow dropping 91% YoY to USD784 million, compared with USD8.5 billion in 2Q last year.

The company raised the lower end of its 2026 capital expenditure guidance from USD125 billion to USD130 billion, while maintaining the upper end at USD145 billion.

Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) had already raised capital expenditure guidance by about 8% in its 1Q results and noted component inflation as one of the reasons.

Mark Zuckerberg reiterated that Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) will continue to adopt a dual-track AI strategy combining open and closed models, and maintain long-term control and performance advantages through a full-stack deployment covering data centers, chips and software, implying continued investment in AI talent and hardware.

China Merchants Securities (HK) maintained its Overweight rating on Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) with a TP of USD870.

Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US)'s solid advertising business and massive user base provide funding, data and distribution advantages for AI-driven advertising efficiency improvement and monetization of diversified businesses.

Although heavy short-term investment pressures free cash flow and profit margin, the company is still expected to improve monetization efficiency of its core advertising business and unlock new revenue streams over the medium to long term.

<Research> JPM: Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) Falls Approx. 7.5% Post-results as Visibility on Monetization of AI Spending Remains Limited

JPM released a report stating that shares of Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) fell about 7.5% in after-hours trading, as market visibility on the monetization of its AI spending outside advertising remains limited.

The report said Meta's 2Q revenue growth rose 27% at constant exchange rates, while its 3Q guidance implied growth of 20%-26% at constant exchange rates.

Although still strong, the outlook came in slightly below expectations.

However, following the results announcement, the market focus is likely to remain on whether Meta can demonstrate returns from its massive AI capital expenditure beyond advertising.

JPM believes market sentiment toward Meta's AI strategy has recently improved, driven by external signs of AI monetization and progress in the Muse Spark 1.1 model.

Investors had therefore expected clearer information regarding the timeline and scale of new opportunities.

However, there was limited incremental information regarding developer APIs, consumer/enterprise agents, or potential plans for directly monetizing computing power.

In addition, Meta did not provide any specific comments on 2027 capital expenditure, only stating that the company is focused on maximizing capacity in 2026 and 2027, while maintaining greater flexibility in 2028 and beyond.

JPM expects Meta to continue investing heavily over the near to medium term, and raised its 2027 capital expenditure forecast to USD243 billion, representing YoY growth of 70%, while largely maintaining its revenue forecasts unchanged, thereby putting greater pressure on free cash flow.

The broker maintained a "Neutral" rating with a TP of USD640.
