Traders Are Near Bullish Highs on This Metal

by Brett Eversole

A conventional data center needs 5,000 to 15,000 tons of copper. The new AI-focused data centers, though, can use as much as 50,000 tons.

The metal won’t rally forever. And with sentiment this stretched, we could see a major drop once copper reverses.

So now is not the time to chase this metal higher. In this case, traders have already made the easy money. And that makes this a dangerous time to bet on copper prices.

Why copper is becoming Asia’s next AI bottleneck

Analysts say its higher prices are unlikely to derail data centre growth but tighter supplies could stymie new capacity

by Benicia Tan

Soaring copper prices are unlikely to derail the expansion of artificial intelligence-driven data centres but they warn that tightening supplies of the metal could lengthen procurement times and delay new data centre capacity coming online.

China produces around 60 per cent of the world’s refined copper.

Aluminium is a cheaper substitute for copper, but the reddish metal’s higher electrical conductivity makes a full substitution unlikely, especially in hyperscaler data centres where efficiency is key.

LME aluminium futures rallied as much as 17.5 per cent between Mar 2 and Jun 2, before shedding 15.8 per cent to close at US$3,159.50 per tonne on Jul 24.

At current price levels, data centre developers could save more than 30 per cent by switching from copper to aluminium for certain parts.

Copper Surges as Shifting Trade Policy and AI Demand Collide
Submitted by Chris Markoch. Publication Date: 9/2/2026.

Copper prices hit record highs above $6.72 per pound, driven by Section 232 tariffs on copper products and surging AI-related data center demand.

Freeport-McMoRan, Southern Copper, and BHP, have all posted strong share price gains and earnings growth as direct or diversified plays on the copper rally.

Some analysts warn that a portion of copper's price surge reflects a temporary tariff-driven policy premium that could fade once trade rules are finalized.
