Will your country have a State Funeral for your Opposition Leader ?

Canada remembers opposition leader at state funeral by Claire Sibonney

TORONTO (Reuters) - A week of mourning for Jack Layton, who headed Canada's official opposition, ended on Saturday at a state funeral, a rare honor that marked the passing of a political leader whose popularity crossed party lines.

Jack Layton, the 61-year-old head of the New Democrats, died of cancer on Monday less than four months after leading his left-leaning party to its best election result in history.

Edmonton’s housing most affordable in Canada, survey shows By Lewis Kelly, edmontonjournal.com

by: Anne-Marie Jackson, Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON - Edmonton enjoys the most affordable housing of Canada’s six major metropolitan regions, according to a study released Monday.

The International Housing Affordability Survey looks at housing in cities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand along with Hong Kong. It found that among Canadian cities with populations above one million, Edmonton has the most affordable housing.

Windsor was the most affordable market of any size, while Vancouver was by far the priciest market in the country.

In fact, Vancouver outranked every city in the survey except Hong Kong, topping markets like New York City, San Francisco, Sydney and London, England.

5.7 quake hits near Canada's Vancouver Island

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Vancouver Island off Canada's west coast on Saturday, the US Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) with the epicenter located 204 kilometers south of the town of Port Hardy on the island, and about 350 kilometers west of the city of Vancouver, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in a preliminary bulletin said the quake, which occurred at 2005 GMT, was not of sufficient magnitude to generate a tsunami warning.

WT Fish ! I used to hang out at this mall regularly ...

Shooting at Toronto mall leaves 1 dead, 7 hurt

A gunman opened fire in a busy food court at one of Canada's best known shopping malls, Toronto's Eaton's Centre, killing a 25-year-old man and leaving seven others injured, police said.

"The nature of the wounds indicate this individual was targeted," said Toronto police chief Bill Blair. "The others were innocent bystanders."

The police chief urged all possible witnesses to come forward and assist with the investigation. He declined to comment on the possible motives of the crime.

"This was outrageous," Blair stressed. "A lot of innocent people were hurt and a lot of innocent people were put at risk."

Hundreds of people were in the area at the time of the incident around 6:30 pm local time (2220 GMT).

The area around the mall, Toronto's largest, was cordoned off by police shortly after the shooting.

Police have a description of the suspect from eyewitnesses, Blair said, adding that the manhunt for the killer was on.

The wounded, some of whom were in serious condition, were being treated at local hospitals. They included a 13-year-old boy. Also hurt was a pregnant woman, who escaped the bullets but was knocked down in the ensuing stampede.

In a statement, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty expressed his condolences to the families and friends of everyone who had suffered as a result of the shooting at the Eaton Centre.

"I also want to thank all the first responders who arrived on the scene and tended to the injured -- and the police who are working hard to bring the shooter to justice," the premier said.

"I know I speak for all Ontarians when I say that while we are saddened and shocked by today's events, we will respond as we always have -- with strength, determination and a desire to work together, and work even harder, to build communities that are safe, secure and free of gun violence."

According to The Toronto Globe and Mail, the scene of the crime was also visited by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford who extended his condolences to the families of the victims.

"This incident tonight is absolutely terrible, and I'm here to offer my support to the police," Ford was quoted by the paper as saying.

A COMMODITY RALLY IS A CANADIAN RALLY

Good news for Canada: Commodities are rallying.

For most of 2011 and 2012, commodities had a tough time. Gold… oil… silver… natural gas… copper… coffee… corn. Nearly every commodity took it on the chin. From its peak in April 2011, the benchmark CRB index lost 28% in just over a year.

But the last few months have seen a big rally in the sector. Oil is up 17%. Natural gas is up 22%. Corn has soared a tremendous 32%, taking wheat and soybeans with it. Even silver, gold, and copper have stopped falling.

It's all good news for our neighbors up north. Canada is the ultimate resource investment destination. It's home to the largest safe store of crude oil in the world… It's also blessed with incredible timber, gold, uranium, agriculture, and natural gas deposits. It's a safe country. And it's right next door to the resource-hungry U.S.

We track the big moves in Canadian stocks using the iShares Canada Fund (EWC). With top holdings like Barrick Gold (the world's largest gold company), Suncor Energy (oil), Potash Corp. (fertilizer), and Canadian Natural Resources (oil)… EWC has gained almost 10% since bottoming in early June and just struck a three-month high.

Where commodities go, so goes Canada. And right now, they're both moving higher.

The Next Bubble is in Canada, and It Will Affect Everybody

What Can You Do?

I’m not the type of guy that will short his stocks and go cash.

So I won’t tell you that going for 2% bonds is a good idea.

However, I’m going to tell you that there is definitely a bumpy ride coming in the next few years for your Canadian (and potentially US) investments.

In the meantime, I’m making sure that my Canadian holdings are strong and can go through the recession while paying nice dividends.

Since this money is invested for my retirement (in 30 years), I can wait and don’t mind my portfolio value as long as I get paid in the meantime.

After all, getting a 4% dividend is a pretty good reason to wait. I’ll probably look to buy more US stocks in the future too. I like the fact that I can diversify my risk by picking international companies!

If Cyprus Is the Bellwether, then Canada Is the Red Flag by Jeff Thomas

Why is Canada making Cyprus-style preparations?

An intriguing article titled "Canada Includes Depositor Haircut Bail-In Provision for Systemically Important Banks in 2013 Budget" was recently published in SD Bullion.

The somewhat lengthy title offers all the information necessary, but for those who – quite understandably – may not be able to accept that they have just watched Canada tumble down the Cypriot rabbit hole, here is a bit more detail from the approved budget itself:
